Order Of The Republic (Sierra Leone)
The Order of the Republic is the premier order of the state of Sierra Leone. (Access date 28 June 2021) It was established by President Siaka Stevens in 1972, to honour Sierra Leoneans and foreign nationals for distinguished and dedicated service to Sierra Leone. (Access date 28 June 2021) Sierra Leonean awards, including the Order of the Republic, do not have post-nominal titles and, while there are no official abbreviations, the most common used unofficially are GCRSL (Grand Commander), CRSL (Commander) and GORSL (Grand Officer). Classes The order originally had four classes, but currently comprises three: * Grand Commander (GCRSL) * Commander (CRSL) * Grand Officer (GORSL) Insignia The ribbon has three vertical stripes: green, white, and blue, representing the colours of the flag of Sierra Leone. The president of the Republic of Sierra Leone is the head of state and the head of government of Sierra Leone, as well as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. As the head of the executive branch of the Sierra Leone government, the president implements laws passed by parliament. The president has influence especially over members of the party of the president in the legislative branch of Parliament. The president constitutionally appoints judges of the Sierra Leone Judicial branch, including judges of the high court, the court of appeals and the Supreme Court. Francis Minah
Francis Misheck Minah (19 August 1929 – 1989) was a Sierra Leonean statesman, lawyer and politician who served as First Vice President of Sierra Leone from 1985 to 1987 under President Siaka Stevens. An ethnic Mende from the Pujehun District, he became a member of the House of Representatives in 1967. He had previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Health, Minister of Trade and Industry and Attorney General and Minister of Justice. In 1987, Minah was investigated by Inspector General Bambay Kamara for plotting a coup against President Joseph Saidu Momoh. He was convicted along with 17 others after a five month trial and subsequently hanged for treason in 1989. A team of international oberservers from Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Algeria and South Korea all concurred that the trial was justified, and was not politically motivated. Michael von der Schulenburg (full name: ''Michael Sergius Graf von der Schulenburg''; born 16 October 1948 in Munich, Germany) is a former senior German diplomat with the United Nations and with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). General David Julian Richards, Baron Richards of Herstmonceux, (born 4 March 1952) is a retired senior British Army officer who was formerly the Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of the British Armed Forces. He succeeded Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup in this role on 29 October 2010. Richards served in the Far East, Germany and Northern Ireland with the Royal Artillery before commanding forces in East Timor and most notably Sierra Leone, where his action without official sanctioning protected Freetown from rebel attacks during the Sierra Leone Civil War.
