Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are an English electronic music, electronic band formed in Wirral Peninsula, Wirral, Merseyside, in 1978. The group consists of co-founders Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals), along with Martin Cooper (musician), Martin Cooper (keyboards, saxophone) and Stuart Kershaw (drums); McCluskey has been the only constant member. Regarded as pioneers of electronic music, OMD combined an Experimental music, experimental, Minimal music, minimalist ethos with pop sensibilities, becoming key figures in the late-1970s/early-1980s emergence of synth-pop. The band were also one of the original acts involved in the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US. Andy McCluskey
George Andrew McCluskey (born 24 June 1959) is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer and bass guitarist of the electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), which he founded alongside keyboard player Paul Humphreys in 1978. The duo have been described as "electro pioneers". McCluskey also founded pop girl group Atomic Kitten, for whom he served as a principal songwriter, and has collaborated with various acts. His work has received nominations at the Ivor Novello, Grammy and Brit Awards, and has topped charts in the UK and internationally. Wirral Peninsula
Wirral (; ), known locally as The Wirral, is a peninsula in North West England. The roughly rectangular peninsula is about long and wide and is bounded by the River Dee to the west (forming the boundary with Wales), the River Mersey to the east, and the Irish Sea to the north. Nigel Ipinson
Nigel Ipinson-Fleming (born 1970, Liverpool, England) is a British keyboardist. He has played, written and produced for several acts including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), The Stone Roses and Ian Brown. Career Ipinson-Fleming started playing piano when he was 3. He first appeared in the group Juvenile Jazz, which won a 1987 BBC TV talent contest on Saturday Superstore called "Search for a Superstar", and issued a self-titled album the same year. Ipinson later played on the Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark albums Sugar Tax (1991) and Liberator (1993), and co-wrote the band's 1996 single, " Walking on the Milky Way". Ipinson-Fleming assisted The Stone Roses as keyboardist throughout the band's Second Coming Tour of 1995 as well as on festival gigs in the summer of 1996, and appeared on some studio recordings by the group. David Hughes (musician)
David Alan Hughes (born 25 April 1960) is an English keyboardist who played in different new wave bands, and later became successful making music for films. Biography New wave years A self-taught musician, David Hughes was born in Birkenhead, England. He founded Dalek I Love You in 1977, alongside guitarist Alan Gill, bassist David Balfe and Chris Teepee. He, alongside Gill, was a remaining member, playing on the first three singles and the debut album, ''Compass Kumpas'', in 1980. However, in January 1980, he left the band, and the album was released in May, when he had left. In January 1980 he joined Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark as percussionist, although he switched to keyboards, and became the group's fourth member playing live on OMD's first headlining tour, live on the ''Old Grey Whistle Test'' and for mimed performances of hit single Messages on Top of the Pops. Malcolm Holmes
Malcolm Holmes (born 28 July 1960 in Birkenhead, England) is a British drummer. He is best known for being the original drummer with Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Biography Holmes’ first drumming sessions were for the Id, who included future members of OMD. He also played on sessions for the Pale Fountains, Dalek I Love You, the Lightning Seeds and Margi Clarke, a.k.a. Margox in the late 1970s. He joined OMD in 1980. He played on over 130 of the band's songs as well contributing live performances at hundreds of OMD concerts. On his first ''Top of the Pops'' TV performance in 1980, he performed standing up, playing an electronic drum kit. Stuart Kershaw
Stuart Kershaw is an English songwriter and musician who performs as drummer of English electronic group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). Kershaw has worked with the band in various capacities since 1991, and in 2015, became the full-time replacement for original drummer Malcolm Holmes. He is credited as a co-writer on multiple OMD releases, including the 1991 UK No. 3 hit, "Sailing on the Seven Seas". In 1998, Kershaw co-founded girl group Atomic Kitten, alongside OMD frontman Andy McCluskey. Martin Cooper (born 1 October 1958) is an English painter and a musician. He is the secondary keyboardist and occasional saxophonist for the band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, whom he first joined in 1980. Musical career Cooper was born in Liverpool. Dalek I Love You
Dalek I Love You were a synthpop group from the Wirral, England. At various points in their existence, the band was also known as Dalek I. Record executives at Phonogram shortened the band's name without telling them for the "Freedom Fighters" single. History Roots: Mr. McKenzie and Radio Blank By the mid-1970s, David Balfe, Alan Gill and Keith Hartley, three residents of Thingwall on the Wirral Peninsula, had formed a band called Mr. McKenzie. In November 1976, as punk was emerging and influencing them, the group changed their name to Radio Blank, composed of Balfe (bass and keyboards), Gill (guitar and vocals) and Hartley (lead vocals and guitar) as well as Stephen Brick (drums). The Id
The Id were a new wave/synthpop band from the Wirral, Merseyside, England formed in 1977. They are best recalled as the precursor to the band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), in which Id members Andy McCluskey (bass, vocals), Paul Humphreys (keyboards) and Malcolm Holmes (drums) would reunite; Gary Hodgson (guitar) would also reappear as a technician for the new group.
