Orchestra Of The City
The Orchestra of the City is based in London, England. Founded in April 2003, the Orchestra of the City consists of amateur but well-trained musicians, and plays to a high standard. It is a subscription orchestra and is run by a committee. The current Musical Director is Chris Hopkins, who took over the role from Ben Bayl in 2009. The orchestra performs large works with recent notable performances including the Premiere of Christopher Gunning's Guitar Concerto with Craig Ogden, Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with Guy Johnston, Bartok Violin Concerto No. 2 with Andrew Harvey and Brahms Double Concerto with Andrew Harvey and Colin Alexander. The orchestra has also been used as a rehearsal orchestra for the likes of Hideko Udagawa and Nicola Benedetti Nicola Joy Nadia Benedetti (born 20 July 1987) is an Italian-British classical solo violinist and festival director. Guy Johnston
Guy Johnston (born 1981) is a British cellist and the winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 2000. He has subsequently enjoyed a successful international career as a soloist and chamber musician and currently serves as an Associate Professor of Cello at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester New York. Career At the age of eight, Johnston became a chorister at King's College, Cambridge and combined singing with the cello. He then attended Chetham's School of Music, Manchester from 1996 to 1999 and studied under acclaimed cellist Steven Doane before going to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, United States. Johnston came to prominence after winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2000, where he notably broke a string playing Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1. Hideko Udagawa
Hideko Udagawa is a Japanese violinist based in London, United Kingdom. Early years and education Hideko Udagawa is the great-granddaughter of former Japanese prime minister Lord Ii Naosuke. She was a student of Nathan Milstein while in London and at the Juilliard School in New York. Career Hideko Udagawa's international performances span thirty countries across Europe, North America – including a tour encompassing twelve cities with the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg – and Asia-Pacific with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Kazimierz Kord. In addition she has toured extensively throughout towns and cities in Great Britain. Nicola Benedetti
Nicola Joy Nadia Benedetti (born 20 July 1987) is an Italian-British classical solo violinist and festival director. Her ability was recognised when she was a child, including the award of BBC Young Musician of the Year when she was 16. She works with orchestras in Europe and America as well as with Alexei Grynyuk, her regular pianist. Since 2012 she has played the Gariel Stradivarius violin. She became the first woman and first Scottish person to lead the Edinburgh International Festival when she was made Festival Director on 1 October 2022. Early life and education Benedetti was born in West Kilbride, North Ayrshire, Scotland, to an Italian father and an Italian-Scottish mother.
