Orazio Gaigher
Orazio Gaigher, also known as Horatius (20 April 1870, Levico Terme 17 May 1938, Merano), was an Austrian-Italian painter and illustrator. Biography He studied medicine in Innsbruck and, after being awarded his degree, became a general practitioner in Salzburg. During those years, he taught himself how to paint, as a hobby. The painter, Hubert von Herkomer, was one of his patients and, in 1901, suggested that he give up being a doctor and come with him to London, where he could put his talents to good use. He also travelled with Herkomer to Spain, and was especially impressed by the works of Diego Velázquez. In Paris, he studied with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, Tony Robert-Fleury and Eugène Carrière. In 1907, he moved to Rome. Later, he divided his time between Madonna di Campiglio, in the summer, and Merano, in the winter. Panama–Pacific International Exposition
The Panama–Pacific International Exposition was a world's fair held in San Francisco, California, United States, from February 20 to December 4, 1915. Its stated purpose was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, but it was widely seen in the city as an opportunity to showcase its recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair was constructed on a site along the northern shore, between the Presidio and Fort Mason, now known as the Marina District. Exhibits and themes Among the exhibits at the Exposition was the '' C. P. Huntington'', the first steam locomotive purchased by Southern Pacific Railroad; the locomotive is now on static display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Edoardo Bassini
Edoardo Bassini (April 14, 1844 – July 19, 1924) was an Italian surgeon born in Pavia. In 1866 he received his medical degree from the University of Pavia, and afterwards joined the Italian Unification movement as an infantry soldier under Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882). In 1867 he was seriously wounded and taken prisoner. Following his release and recovery, he traveled throughout Europe, furthering his medical studies. He learned surgical procedures in Vienna under Theodor Billroth (1829–1894), in Berlin under Bernhard von Langenbeck (1810–1887), and in Munich with Johann Nepomuk von Nussbaum (1829–1890). He also visited London, where he met with Thomas Spencer Wells (1818–1897) and Joseph Lister (1827–1912). Afterwards, he was in charge of the surgical department at the hospital La Spezia, and in 1878 became a lecturer in surgery at Parma. Kurhaus, Meran
The Kurhaus of Meran, South Tyrol is a famous building in the town and a symbol of it. The ornate structure was constructed at a time when Meran became a popular spa resort due to the frequent visits of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and the aristocracy. The building's original structure, which is today's west wing, was constructed in 1874 while the newer wing was added in 1912 and 1914 by the Viennese ''Jugendstil'' architect Friedrich Ohmann. The exterior features a large portico with columns and is decorated with allegorical statues. The rotunda is visible from far. The interior is decorated with paintings by Rudolf Jettmar, Orazio Gaigher and Alexander Rothaug and has various conference and exhibitions rooms that are used for events and concerts. An ''Ex Libris'' (from ''ex-librīs'', ), also known as a bookplate (or book-plate, as it was commonly styled until the early 20th century), is a printed or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the front endpaper, to indicate ownership. Simple typographical bookplates are termed "book labels". Bookplates often bear a motif relating to the book's owner, such as a coat-of-arms, crest (heraldry), crest, badge, motto, or a design commissioned from an artist or designer. The name of the owner usually follows an inscription such as "from the books of..." or "from the library of...", or in Latin, "". Bookplates are important evidence for the provenance of books.
