''Opheliamachine'' is a Postmodernism, postmodernist drama by the Polish-born American playwright and dramaturg, Magda Romanska. Written in the span of ten years, from 2002 to 2012, the play is a response to and polemic with the German language, German playwright Heiner Muller, Heiner Mueller's ''Hamletmachine'' (in German, Die Hamletmaschine). Like ''Hamletmachine'', ''Opheliamachine'' is loosely based on ''Hamlet'', by William Shakespeare. The play originated in relation to Romanska's doctoral dissertation on the representation of death and femininity. In ''Hamletmachine'', Mueller deconstructs the impossible position of an Eastern European intellectual at the peak of the Cold War as well as the seemingly disappearing agency of the author. Witold Marian Gombrowicz (August 4, 1904 – July 24, 1969) was a Polish writer and playwright. His works are characterised by deep psychological analysis, a certain sense of paradox and absurd, anti-nationalist flavor. In 1937 he published his first novel, '' Ferdydurke'', which presented many of his usual themes: problems of immaturity and youth, creation of identity in interactions with others, and an ironic, critical examination of class roles in Polish society and culture. He gained fame only during the last years of his life, but is now considered one of the foremost figures of Polish literature. The Berliner Ensemble () is a German theatre company established by actress Helene Weigel and her husband, playwright Bertolt Brecht, in January 1949 in East Berlin.
