Opera Theatre Of Lucca
The Opera Theatre of Lucca is an opera and music school and summer music festival in Lucca, Italy. Founded in 1996 by the late American opera singer and voice teacher Lorenzo Malfatti and British opera director Malcolm Fraser, it is jointly sponsored by the City of Lucca and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Opera performances and recitals take place in the cloisters, churches, piazzas in and around Lucca as well as in the city's Teatro del Giglio. Lorenzo Malfatti (September 11, 1923, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – November 23, 2007, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was a baritone opera singer and professor of music at Chatham College, where he taught voice, diction, and opera, and conducted the Chatham College Choir. Later in his career he was a voice coach for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He later joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. He was an alumnus of the Juilliard School, the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, Italy, and the St. Cecilia Conservatory and Academy in Rome, Italy. He held an honorary doctorate from Chatham College. Teatro Del Giglio
The Teatro del Giglio (Theater of the Giglio) is the historic city theater and opera house located in Piazza del Giglio #13 and #15 in the center of Lucca, region of Tuscany, Italy. History The prior Teatro Pubblico (Public Theater), inaugurated in 1675, which had been destroyed by a fire and rebuilt. After the Napoleonic upheavals, the site had fallen to ruin. A new theater, represented by this Neoclassical-style structure, was built at the site in 1818 by Giovanni Lazzarini. The rusticated portico is surmounted by a balustrade upholding pilasters, that lead to a tympanum with the coat of arms of the city. The frieze reads ''Teatro Comunale del Giglio''.
