Onkaparinga River
The Onkaparinga River, known as Ngangkiparri or Ngangkiparingga ("place of the women’s river") in the Kaurna language, is a river located in the Southern Adelaide region in the Australian state of South Australia. Rising in the Mount Lofty Ranges, the river's estuary extends from Old Noarlunga to the river's mouth between the suburbs of Port Noarlunga and Port Noarlunga South. Etymology and history The name derives from the language of the Kaurna people, a word written as either Ngangkiparri or Ngangkiparingga (the -''ngga'' suffix means "at"). Translated, it means "place of the women’s river". On 13 April 1831, British Military Officer Captain Collet Barker and his party arrived at Cape Jervis on the Isabella. Onkaparinga River National Park
Onkaparinga River National Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located about south of Adelaide city centre. It extends over the floodplain of the Onkaparinga River east of Main South Road. History Most of the land now dedicated to the national park was purchased in the period 1973 to 1977 by a former SA government agency, the State Planning Authority. The purpose of the land acquisition which included land along the full length of Onkaparinga River was threefold. Firstly, it was ‘to provide open space for recreational purposes’, secondly, ‘to preserve the natural character of the landscape, including the native flora and fauna’ and thirdly, ‘to function as a buffer between areas of urban and rural land.’ In 1982, the majority of the land was transferred to the then Department for Environment and Heritage which established the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park in 1985. Onkaparinga River Recreation Park
Onkaparinga River Recreation Park is a protected area occupying land in the estuary of the Onkaparinga River in South Australia. The recreation park which was established in 1985 is approximately from Adelaide city centre. It is the venue for recreational activities such as walking, canoeing, kayaking, recreational fishing and picnics. Description The recreation park occupies the majority of the portion of the river's catchment area between Main South Road near Old Noarlunga in the east and Commercial and Saltfleet Roads at Port Noarlunga in the west. The occupied land is located within the following suburbs in the City of Onkaparinga: Noarlunga Downs, Port Noarlunga South and Seaford Meadows. Port Noarlunga South, South Australia
Port Noarlunga South is a suburb in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Adelaide metropolitan area on the coastline of Gulf St Vincent about south of the state capital of Adelaide. Port Noarlunga South started as a private sub-division in 1923 with portions gazetted with the names Paringa and Port Onkaparinga. A portion of land was added to the suburb in 1960 from an area known as Onkaparinga and was subsequently removed in 1995 to create the suburb of Seaford Meadows. In April 2001, the South Port Surf Life Saving Club submitted a proposal to rename parts of both the suburbs of Port Noarlunga and Port Noarlunga South as South Port. However, this proposal was withdrawn in August 2001 following discussions with the City of Onkaparinga regarding "locational identification issues " and replace with a request to "investigate the naming of South Port Beach." Charleston, South Australia
Charleston is a small town in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. It is situated on the Onkaparinga Valley Road between Woodside and Mount Torrens, on the main route from the Adelaide Hills to the Barossa Valley, and 3km south-east of Lobethal. Charleston is very close to the source of the River Onkaparinga. John Hill (explorer)
John Hill (c. 1810 – 11 August 1860) was an English explorer of South Australia and part of the European exploration of Australia. Hill was the first European to see and traverse the Clare Valley. An enigmatic and little-known individual, during the late 1830s John Hill sighted and named several important rivers of South Australia, as well as many lesser streams and creeks. The former unquestionably include the Wakefield and Hutt rivers, plus (most probably) the Gilbert and Light rivers. He was also the first European to explore the headwaters of the Torrens and Onkaparinga rivers. In 1908 the ''Register'' newspaper (while incorrectly naming him 'William') accorded him the title of South Australia's "Discoverer of Rivers". Hill River and Mount Hill are named after him. George Imlay
George Imlay (1794–1846), together with his brothers Alexander (1794-1847) and Peter (1797–1881), was a Scottish-born pioneer settler in southern New South Wales. All three reached Australia as military surgeons serving on convict ships. They operated in the region as pastoralists, whalers and shipbuilders. The ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'' says George Imlay was born in 1794. If this is correct, he and Alexander were probably twins. George trained in medicine and became a naval surgeon. While in the navy he served on the three-deck naval warship ''Britannia''. Ports he visited while on that vessel include Algiers and Halifax, Nova Scotia. On one occasion he had to act as a second in a duel between two fellow officers one of who was Lieutenant Baldwin Walker. George Gawler
Lieutenant-Colonel George Gawler, KH, (21 July 1795 – 7 May 1869) was the second Governor of South Australia, at the same time serving as Resident Commissioner, from 17 October 1838 until 15 May 1841. Biography Early life Gawler, born on 21 July 1795, was the only child of Captain Samuel Gawler, captain in the 73rd Regiment of Foot, and his wife Julia, née Russell. Gawler's father was killed in battle in Mysore, India in December 1804. The Gawler family historically came from Devon. George Gawler was educated by a tutor, then at a school in Cold Bath, Islington. Two years were then spent at the Royal Military College, Great Marlow, where he was a diligent and clever student. ''Rapid'' was the brig that brought William Light's surveying party to the new colony of South Australia. She was wrecked in 1841. History ''Rapid'' was built in 1826 at Yarmouth, and featured a carved figurehead in the shape of a greyhound. She first appeared in ''Lloyd's Register'' (''LR'') in 1826 with William Joy, master, Priest & Co., owner, and trade Yarmouth–Hull. William Light
William Light (27 April 1786 – 6 October 1839), also known as Colonel Light, was a British- Malayan naval and army officer. He was the first Surveyor-General of the new British Province of South Australia, known for choosing the site of the colony's capital, Adelaide, and for designing the layout of its streets, six city squares, gardens and the figure-eight Adelaide Park Lands, in a plan later sometimes referred to as Light's Vision. He was the eldest son of Captain Francis Light, founder of Penang, and Martina Rozells.
