''On the Reeperbahn at Half Past Midnight'' (german: Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins) is a 1954 West German comedy drama film directed by Wolfgang Liebeneiner and starring Hans Albers, Heinz Rühmann and Fita Benkhoff. The film is set in Hamburg and was one of two 1950s films starring Albers attempting to emulate the success of his 1944 hit ''Große Freiheit Nr. 7''. The film takes its name from the 1912 song of the same name and is not a remake of the 1929 silent film of the same title. A further version was made in 1969 with Curd Jürgens. It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in West Berlin and on location around Hamburg, including St. Pauli and Cuxhaven as well as on Heligoland. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Willi Herrmann and Heinrich Weidemann. Wolfgang Liebeneiner
Wolfgang Georg Louis Liebeneiner (6 October 1905 – 28 November 1987) was a German actor, film director and theatre director. Beginnings He was born in Lubawka, Liebau in Prussian Silesia. In 1928, he was taught by Otto Falckenberg, the director of the Munich Kammerspiele, in acting and directing. Nazi era In 1936, Liebeneiner became a member of the Konzerthaus Berlin, Prussian State Theater () in Berlin and in 1938, he became artistic director of the German Film Academy Potsdam-Babelsberg, Babelsberg (). In 1941, he directed the film ''Ich klage an'' (''I accuse'') in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. The film was about Euthanasia, voluntary euthanasia of a woman suffering from multiple sclerosis, but was intended to support the Action T4, T4 euthanasia program. A revue is a type of multi-act popular theatrical entertainment that combines music, dance, and sketches. The revue has its roots in 19th century popular entertainment and melodrama but grew into a substantial cultural presence of its own during its golden years from 1916 to 1932. Though most famous for their visual spectacle, revues frequently satirized contemporary figures, news or literature. Similar to the related subforms of operetta and musical theatre, the revue art form brings together music, dance and sketches to create a compelling show. Reeperbahn
The Reeperbahn () is a street and entertainment district in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, one of the two centres of Hamburg's nightlife (the other being Sternschanze) and also the city's major red-light district. In German, it is also nicknamed ''die sündigste Meile'' (the most sinful mile) and ''Kiez''. The Reeperbahn Festival is among the largest club festivals. Name and history The name ''Reeperbahn'' means ropewalk, which is a place where ropes are made ( nds, Reep = rope, the standard German word is ; = track). Until the 1620s Hamburg's ropewalks had been located in the Neustadt (New Town) quarter of the inner city close to the Elbe, which then became a densely built up area. Heligoland
Heligoland (; german: Helgoland, ; Heligolandic Frisian: , , Mooring Frisian: , da, Helgoland) is a small archipelago in the North Sea. A part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein since 1890, the islands were historically possessions of Denmark, then became the possessions of the United Kingdom from 1807 to 1890, and briefly managed as a war prize from 1945 to 1952. Cuxhaven (; ) is an independent town and seat of the Cuxhaven district, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The town includes the northernmost point of Lower Saxony.
