Olten–Lausanne Railway Line
The Mittellandlinie ("Midland line") is a railway route in Switzerland. It runs from Olten via Bern and Fribourg to Lausanne. The Olten–Bern railway was completed in 1858 and two years later the Lausanne–Bern railway was opened. In addition, the Mattstetten–Rothrist new line was opened in 2004, which together with the Born Railway and the Grauholz Tunnel, Grauholz line, forms a high-speed line between Olten and Bern. Olten
Olten (High Alemannic: ''Oute'') is a town in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland and capital of the district of the same name. Olten's railway station is within 30 minutes of Zürich, Basel, Bern, and Lucerne by train, and is a rail hub of Switzerland. History Significant amounts of artefacts of the Magdalenian (c. 16'000 to 14'000 years ago) have been excavated near Olten. There are also finds dated to the Mesolithic and Neolithic, but there is no trace of a settlement, and no ceramic finds; finds dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages are also rather limited. There was a vicus at the site during the Roman era. The name of the settlement is not known, but it seems to have been of a certain importance, presumably reflecting the presence of a bridge across the Aar River. Lausanne–Bern Railway
The Lausanne–Bern railway is a mainline railway in Switzerland. The first part of the line was opened in 1860 and the original line was completed on 4 September 1862. The line was built by the Swiss Central Railway and the Lausanne–Fribourg–Bern Railway, which were taken over by the Swiss Federal Railways on its establishment in 1902. History The Canton of Fribourg delayed the construction of the line from Bern to Lausanne in a bid to have it run through the city of Fribourg rather than on flatter land further west; in 1857 the Swiss government, the canton of Vaud and the West Switzerland Company gave in, allowing construction to commence on the line. Mattstetten–Rothrist New Line
The Mattstetten–Rothrist new line (''Neubaustrecke Mattstetten-Rothrist'') is Switzerland's first railway to reach speeds above 160 km/h (100mph) in regular operations, running between Mattstetten and Rothrist. It forms most of the Olten–Bern railway line, which makes up over half of the trunk route connecting Switzerland's main city, Zürich and its capital, Bern. The new line opened on 12 December 2007, as the centrepiece of the Rail 2000 project, a comprehensive upgrade of Swiss railways. The line is almost long, with one branch.
