Olivia DeMerchant
Olivia DeMerchant (born February 16, 1991) is a Canadian rugby union player. She has represented at the 2014, 2017 and 2021 Rugby World Cup's. Rugby career In 2011, DeMerchant played for the Canadian women's under-20 team. She represented at the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup. DeMerchant played four seasons for St. Francis Xavier University where she studied. She subsequently returned, after playing with the Saracens Ladies in 2016–2018, and is currently playing her final year of eligibility in the 2018 season. DeMerchant was selected in Canada's squad for the 2021 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. In 2023, she scored a try against the Black Ferns in her sides 21–52 defeat at the Pacific Four Series in Ottawa. The match earned her her 55th cap and she now sits third all-time for Canada alongside Maria Gallo. Rugby Union Positions
In the game of rugby union, there are 15 players on each team, comprising eight forwards (wearing jerseys numbered 1–8) and seven backs (numbered 9–15). In addition, there may be up to eight replacement players "on the bench", numbered 16–23. Players are not restricted to a single position, although they generally specialise in just one or two that suit their skills and body types. Players that play multiple positions are called "utility players". Forwards compete for the ball in scrums and line-outs and are generally bigger and stronger than the backs. 2023 Pacific Four Series
The 2023 Pacific Four Series was the third edition of the Pacific Four Series, an international women's rugby union tournament that served as one of the principal qualification routes for the top two tiers of WXV. The tournament was hosted by Spain, Australia and Canada. The series took place over three months. The first round saw Canada and the United States play the opening match in Madrid on 1 April 2023, followed by Australia hosting New Zealand on 29 June 2023 in Brisbane. The series concluded in Canada with all four teams competing over two weekends in early July for the title. Gillian Florence
Gillian Florence is a Canadian rugby union player who has participated in five world cups (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010). Starting out as a prop on the national team, she became one of Canada's top flankers. Florence first started playing rugby in high school (1987–1992) in Grade ten and John Abbott College (1992–1994). Her first cap was at the 1994 Women's Rugby World Cup, at the age of 18, and retired in 2011. She represented Quebec for eighteen years and played for Ste. Anne de Bellevue for twenty-two years. Having played one season with McGill University in 1995–1996, her national schedule conflicted with the university team's schedule. Maritime Women's Football League
The Maritime Women's Football League (MWFL) is a Canadian football league in eastern Canada. It was Canada's first all-female full-contact football competition when it began operating in 2004. Since it was established, the League has grown from two to four teams. They hail from the three major cities of New Brunswick (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Fredericton, Moncton, New Brunswick, Moncton, and Saint John, New Brunswick, Saint John) along with a team from Halifax Urban Area, Halifax, Nova Scotia. A fifth team, on Prince Edward Island, played in the 2019 MWFL season before the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, COVID-19 pandemic. Maria Gallo
Dr. Maria Eugenia Gallo (born 21 September 1977) is a Canadian rugby player with 55 caps including the 2002 and 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup. A multi-talented athlete, Gallo was also a member of Canada's National Bobsleigh Team for two years (2003–04). She was inducted in the Rugby Canada Hall of Fame in 2018 in the player category. Gallo is the second woman to be inducted into the Rugby Canada Hall of Fame. Gallo is considered one of the top ten North American women rugby union players. Her team nickname is "the Tank". Gallo represented Ontario winning the 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000 national championship. In university, she played for the University of Guelph Guelph Gryphons and University of Alberta Alberta Pandas. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. New Zealand Women's National Rugby Union Team
The New Zealand women's rugby union team, called the Black Ferns, represents New Zealand in women's international rugby union, which is regarded as the country's national sport.
