Oleni
Oleni ( el, Ωλένη) is a village and a former municipality in Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Pyrgos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 152.231 km2. The seat of the municipality was in Karatoula. The municipal unit was named after the ruined medieval town Olena, which also gave its name to the Bishopric of Olena. It consists of a wide valley around Karatoula and Magoula, and the hills west and east of the valley. It is located about 10 km northeast of Pyrgos, 13 km northwest of Olympia and 20 km southeast of Amaliada. The largest community is Goumero. The ancient town Amphidolis was located near present Karatoula. Karatoula, Elis
Karatoula ( el, Καράτουλα, also Καράτουλας ''Karatoulas'') is a village in the municipal unit of Oleni, central Elis, Greece. Karatoula was the seat of the former municipality of Oleni. It is situated in a wide valley between hills, at about 90 m elevation. Karatoula is 1 km north of Magoula, 2 km west of Oleni (village), 2 km east of Charia, 13 km northwest of Olympia and 11 km northeast of Pyrgos. The river Alyseios, also known as Karatoulaiko Potami, flows west of the village. History According to book references, the ancient town Amphidolis was located at the site of present Karatoula.. Agia Anna, Ilia
Agia Anna ( el, Αγία Άννα meaning Saint Anne) is a mountain village in the municipal unit of Oleni, Elis, Greece. In 2011 its population was 168. Agia Anna is built on the slopes of the hill Axofolia, a western spur of the Foloi plateau. In the village square, the elevation is 450 m, and the top of the hill is around 670 m. Agia Anna is 2 km northeast of Goumero, 4 km west of Klindia, 10 km southeast of Simopoulo and 10 km northeast of Karatoula. The area is forested, but suffered damage from the 2007 Greek forest fires. Population History The village Agia Anna was founded in a remote place during Ottoman rule, to hide from the Turks. The village is named after its church. Between 1841 and 1912, the community was part of the old municipality of Lampeia. Goumero ( el, Γούμερο) is a village in the municipal unit of Oleni, Elis, Greece. In 2011 its population was 642. It is situated on a hillside in the western foothills of the Foloi plateau, at 500 m elevation. It is 2 km southwest of Agia Anna, 5 km northwest of Neraida, 8 km northeast of Karatoula and 13 km north of Olympia. Population History Goumero is built in the area where the Ancient town Alesyon (Αλήσυον) or Alesaion (Αλησαίον), mentioned by Strabo, was located. The village was first mentioned as ''Vumero'' in the 14th century. Pyrgos ( el, Πύργος, meaning "tower") is a city in the northwestern Peloponnese, Greece, capital of the regional unit of Elis and the seat of the Municipality of Pyrgos. Pineia
Pineia (Greek: Πηνεία) is a former municipality in Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ilida, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 148.572 km2. Its seat of administration was in the village Simopoulo. Pineia is named after the river Pineios, which forms its northern border. The area is hilly and sparsely populated. It is about 20 km east of Amaliada, 25 km northeast of Pyrgos and 45 km southwest of Patras. Elis (regional Unit)
Elis or Ilia ( el, Ηλεία, ''Ileia'') is a historic region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011 it was Elis Prefecture, covering the same territory. The modern regional unit is nearly coterminous with the ancient Elis of the classical period. Here lie the ancient ruins of cities of Elis, Epitalion and Olympia, known for the ancient Olympic Games which started in 776 BC.
