Foloi ( el, Φολόη, Latin: ''Pholoe'') is a village and a former Communities and Municipalities of Greece, municipality in Elis (regional unit), Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Olympia, Greece, Archaia Olympia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 174.202 km2. The seat of the municipality was in the village Lalas, in the southern part of the municipal unit. The village Foloi is situated in the northwestern part. Foloi is situated in a mountainous, sparsely populated area. The Foloi oak forest is located in the municipal unit. Foloi is located about 15 km northeast of Olympia, Greece, Olympia, 30 km east of Pyrgos (Ilia), Pyrgos and 55 km south of Patras. Foloi Oak Forest
The Folóï oak forest ( el, Δρυοδάσος Φολόης) is an oak forest in southwestern Greece. It is located in the municipal unit Foloi, Elis, in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula. The Folóï oak forest is situated at an altitude of 688m, on the plateau of the Folóï mountain. It is an ecosystem unique in the Balkan peninsula and consists of a territory of , which is almost entirely covered by deciduous oaks that form a dense forest area. Mythology The Pholóē oak forest was known to Ancient Greeks, because of its proximity to many of their settlements in the Elis region. The mysterious beauty of the forest inspired them to believe that it was a habitat of centaurs and dryads. They gave the forest the name ''Pholóē'' ( el, Φολόη, modern Greek pronunciation: Folóï) and the chief of the Centaurs the name ''Phólos'' ( el, Φόλος). Koumanis
Koumanis ( el, Κούμανης, also Κούμανι - ''Koumani'') is a mountain village and a community in the municipal unit of Foloi, Elis (regional unit), Elis, Greece. Its population in 2011 was 498 for the village and 506 for the community, which includes the small villages Ai Giannakis and Kastania. Koumanis is located at 650 m above sea level, at the northern edge of the Foloi oak forest. The small rivers Gkoura and Koumaneiko form deep ravines near Koumanis. Its climate is cool during the summer and wet during the winter. Koumanis is 3 km east of the village Foloi, 3 km southeast of Antroni, 9 km southwest of Lampeia and 20 km northeast of Olympia, Greece, Olympia. Doukas, Elis
Doukas ( el, Δούκας) is a mountain village and a community in the municipal unit of Foloi, Elis, Greece. In 2011 its population was 34 for the village and 112 for the community, which includes the village Lasdikas. Situated at approximately 600 m above sea level, its climate is relatively cool during the summer and wet during the winter. Doukas is 2 km northwest of Lalas, 4 km east of Kryoneri and 11 km northeast of Olympia. The village was affected by the 2007 Greek forest fires. Erymanthos (river)
Erymanthos ( el, Ερύμανθος, la, Erymanthus) is a river in the western part of the Peloponnese in Greece. Its source is on the southern slope of the Mount Erymanthos, near the village Agrampela, Achaea. It flows towards the south through a rocky landscape and receives several small tributaries. The river flows into an area rich in pine trees and passes several small mountain villages including Tripotama. Beyond Tripotama it forms the border between Elis and Arcadia. Elis (regional Unit)
Elis or Ilia ( el, Ηλεία, ''Ileia'') is a historic region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011 it was Elis Prefecture, covering the same territory. The modern regional unit is nearly coterminous with the ancient Elis of the classical period. Centaur
A centaur ( ; grc, κένταυρος, kéntauros; ), or occasionally hippocentaur, is a creature from Greek mythology with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse. Centaurs are thought of in many Greek myths as being as wild as untamed horses, and were said to have inhabited the region of Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly, the Foloi oak forest in Elis, and the Malean peninsula in southern Laconia.
