Old Etonians FC
The Old Etonians Association Football Club is an English association football club whose players are alumni of Eton College, in Eton, Berkshire. Having been a member of The Football Association and played several editions of the FA Cup, Old Etonians currently play in the Premier Division, the highest level of the Arthurian League. History Founded by Lord Kinnaird, they were the last amateur or "true blue" club to win the FA Cup on 25 March 1882 when they beat Blackburn Rovers 1–0 at The Oval with a goal from William Anderson. They lost 2–1 after extra time to another Blackburn club, Blackburn Olympic, the following year. In all, they reached the final six times in nine years between 1875 and 1883, winning twice. They also supplied a number of players for the England team, including three in one match against Wales in 1879. Old Etonians' last participation in the FA Cup was the 1887–88 edition. Eton, Berkshire
Eton ( ) is a town in Berkshire, England, on the opposite bank of the River Thames to Windsor, connected to it by Windsor Bridge. The civil parish, which also includes the village of Eton Wick two miles west of the town, had a population of 4,692 at the 2011 Census. Amateur Football Alliance
The Amateur Football Alliance is a county football association in England. It is unusual among county FAs in not serving a particular geographical area. It was founded in 1906 as the Amateur Football Defence Council, was briefly known as the Amateur Football Defence Federation, and was reformed as the Amateur Football Association in 1907, when The FA required all county associations to admit professional clubs. Its aim was, as the decline of amateurism at the highest levels of football set in, to protect and preserve the original amateur spirit. Reginald Macaulay
Reginald Heber Macaulay (24 August 1858 – 15 December 1937) was an amateur English footballer who won the FA Cup with Old Etonians in 1882 and made one appearance for England in 1880-81 in English football, 1881 playing as a Striker (association football), forward. Family Background Macaulay was born in Hodnet, Shropshire, son of a rector of the parish who was cousin of the historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, Lord Macaulay. Classical scholar George Campbell Macaulay was a brother, through whom author Rose Macaulay was his niece. His forenames appear to have been given after Bishop Reginald Heber (1783-1826), also an earlier rector of Hodnet. Alfred Lyttelton
Alfred Lyttelton KC (7 February 1857 – 5 July 1913) was a British politician and sportsman from the Lyttelton family who excelled at both football and cricket. During his time at university he participated in Varsity Matches in five sports: cricket (1876–79), football (1876–78), athletics (1876; selected to throw the hammer), rackets (1877–79) and real tennis (1877–79), displaying an ability that made him arguably the pre-eminent sportsman of his generation; his only rival in terms of versatility was Oxford's Cuthbert Ottaway. Percy De Paravicini
Percy John de Paravicini (15 July 1862 – 11 October 1921) was an English amateur cricketer and international footballer in the late nineteenth century. Early life and education He was born in Kensington, London, the son of Baron James Prior de Paravicini, of Riverside, Datchet, Windsor. He was educated at Aldin House, Slough and Eton College, where he was a member of the cricket eleven from 1878 to 1881, being captain in 1880 and 1881. Cricket career De Paravicini was one of an elite few to have played for the Eton College cricket XI for four consecutive years, and arguably he was one of the best players the school has had. Alexander Bonsor
Alexander George Bonsor (7 October 1851 – 17 August 1907) was one of the earliest known footballers. Career Bonsor played in the 1872 FA Cup Final – the first ever final in the FA Cup's history – and finished on the winning side. He played for the Wanderers that day, and with Wanderers he won the cup the following year as well. Bonsor appeared in the 1875 final playing for Old Etonians, scoring a goal, as his side drew 1–1. They lost the replay, but Bonsor was back in the final the following year. He played for Old Etonians again, and scored again. Old Etonians drew that match 1–1 but, once again, lost the replay. Herbert Whitfeld
Herbert Whitfeld (15 November 1858 – 6 May 1909) was an English amateur sportsman who played association football and county cricket. In football, he helped Old Etonians win the 1879 FA Cup Final and was on the losing side in 1881 as well as making one appearance for England in 1879. In cricket, he played for Sussex County Cricket Club whom he captained in 1883 and 1884. He was later a director of Barclays Bank. Early career and education Whitfeld was born in Hamsey, near Lewes in East Sussex and was educated at Eton where he developed an interest in all forms of sport and played for the college football team in 1877. John Hawtrey
John Purvis Hawtrey (19 July 1850 – 17 August 1925) was an English amateur footballer who earned two caps for the national team in 1881 playing as a goalkeeper. Career His football career started with Remnants F.C. and he later played for Old Etonians, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1879. His international appearances both came in 1881, against Wales and Scotland. England lost both games and Hawtrey conceded a total of seven goals. Harry Goodhart
Harry Chester Goodhart (17 July 1858 – 21 April 1895) was an English amateur footballer who played as a forward in four FA Cup Finals for Old Etonians, before going on to become Professor of Humanity at the University of Edinburgh. Early life and education Goodhart was born in Wimbledon, the son of Charles Woide Goodhart (1829–1914), and educated at Eton College. He played for the college football team in 1877 and also represented the college in cricket. He made his first cricket appearance for the college in June 1876 and played throughout that summer and the following. His finest spell came in July 1876 when he scored 55 against I Zingari and 51 against Harrow School in consecutive matches. During his time at Eton, Goodhart was a friend of James Kenneth Stephen (1859–1892) who became a poet. Arthur Dunn
Arthur Tempest Blakiston Dunn (12 August 1860 in Whitby, Yorkshire – 20 February 1902 in Ludgrove near Barnet, Hertfordshire) was a noted amateur footballer who founded the English boarding school, Ludgrove, in 1892. Education Dunn, son of a Cambridge University mathematics professor, was educated at Eton College, then entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1880, graduating B.A. in 1884, and M.A. in 1887. Football career Dunn played football for Eton College, and was a Cambridge University football blue in 1883 and 1884. C.W. Alcock described Dunn, who usually played inside-left as "A good centreforward, rather light, but has plenty of pluck, and is a sure shot at goal", and "has great pace, and both dribbles and middles well".
