Olavi Salonen
Olavi Salonen (born 20 December 1933 in Noormarkku) is a Finnish athlete. He is a former world record holder of men's 1500-metre run. Biography Salonen participated the Summer Olympic Games in 1500 m. in 1960 and 1964. At the European Athletics Championships he competed twice on 800 metres, 1958 and 1962 On 11 July 1957 Salonen ran a 1500-metre race in Turku. He finished second with the same world record time 3:40.2 as the winner Olavi Salsola. The new world record stood only for one day. István Rózsavölgyi (30 March 1929 – 27 January 2012) was a Hungarian athlete who competed mainly in the 1500 metres. Career Rózsavölgyi was born in Budapest. One of the star pupils of Mihály Iglói, he entered the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia as the world record holder over 1000 metres, 1500 metres and 2000 metres and was expected to be a leading contender for the 1500 metres Olympic gold. However, outside circumstances shook the spirit of team Hungary. Sándor Iharos, another superstar, was absent. Back home, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 had just been quashed by the Soviet army. Rózsavölgyi failed to even make the final. The post-Olympic decision of Iglói and fellow 1500 m runner László Tábori not to return to Hungary was further bad news for Rózsavölgyi, who instead of training with a good friend and under a phenomenally successful coach and mentor had to continue his career essentially alone. Stanislav Jungwirth
Stanislav Jungwirth (15 August 1930 - 11 April 1986) was a Czechoslovak middle-distance runner. Jungwirth came third in the 1500 metres at the 1954 European Championships and set a world record for the same distance in 1957. Career Jungwirth started training seriously in 1949. By 1951, he was already a quality runner, running the 1500 metres in 3:48.8; ''Track and Field News'' ranked him No. 8 in the world that year. In 1952, he won the Czechoslovak championship at both 800 and 1500 metres and was selected to run the latter distance at the Olympics in Helsinki, where he survived the heats but went out in the semi-finals. Late in October 1952, he set a new world record at 1000 metres in Stará Boleslav, running 2:21.2 to better Olle Åberg's time by 0.1 seconds. This record was broken less than ten months later by the United States' Mal Whitfield.
