Okha (russian: Оха́) is a town and the administrative center of Okhinsky District of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. Population: Geography Okha is located on the east coast of the far north of Sakhalin island, just south of the isthmus of the Schmidt Peninsula, approximately north of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, near the shoreline of the Sea of Okhotsk. History It was founded shortly after the discovery of petroleum in the area in 1880, initially under the name ''Okhe''. The name is derived from an Ainu word meaning ''Bad Water''. Industrial exploitation of the petroleum reserves began in 1923, during the Japanese occupation of Sakhalin from 1920-1925. During this time the town was called or depending on Kanji used. Nikolayevsk Incident
The was an international conflict in Nikolayevsk-on-Amur in the Russian Far East between Japan and the Far Eastern Republic during the Japanese intervention. The culmination was the execution of imprisoned Japanese prisoners of war and survivors of Japanese residents without trial from 23 to 31 May 1920, which followed after the armed conflict between the guerrillas and the Japanese army from 12 to 15 March 1920 in Nikolaevsk-on-Amur. A total of 129 Japanese prisoners and a number of local residents and guerrillas were held in the prison at that time. The destruction of the town and the fortress and the execution took place after the evacuation of the entire population due to the offensive of the Japanese army. Neftegorsk, Sakhalin Oblast
Neftegorsk (), formerly Vostok (, lit. ''east'') before 1970, is a ghost town in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. Building The city was built in 1963. It was an urban-type oil-mining settlement, with its name meaning "Oil Town". Construction Minister Yefim Basin decided not to rebuild it after its destruction. Destruction It was devastated on May 28, 1995 by an earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, killing 2,040 people out of a total population of 3,197. An oil-producing town in northern Sakhalin, all buildings in Neftegorsk suffered extensive damage and many were completely destroyed, as they had been built with low quality concrete and were not designed to withstand seismic activity. The majority of the victims were killed by the rubble of their apartment buildings collapsing. 1995 Neftegorsk Earthquake
__NOTOC__ The 1995 Neftegorsk earthquake occurred on 28 May at on northern Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East. It was the most destructive earthquake known within the current territory of Russia, with a magnitude of and maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent'') that devastated the oil town of Neftegorsk, where 1,989 of its 3,977 citizens were killed, and another 750 injured. 90% of the victims were killed by the collapse of 17 five-story residential buildings. While Western media generally attributed the collapses to allegedly poor construction and shoddy materials of Soviet-era construction, a geotechnical study faulted a failure to accommodate the possibility of soil liquefaction in an area that was considered "practically aseismic". Ainu (, ), or more precisely Hokkaido Ainu, is a language spoken by a few elderly members of the Ainu people on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
