The state of Ohio has a procedure for dedicating properties as state nature preserves through the Ohio Division of Natural Areas & Preserves. Some preserves are owned outright by the state, while others are owned by other agencies. Some are open to the public, and others are not. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is the Ohio state government agency charged with ensuring "a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all." ODNR regulates the oil and gas industry, the mining industry, hunting and fishing, and dams, while maintaining natural resources such as state parks, state nature preserves, state wildlife areas, state forests, and state waterways. It was created in 1949 by the Ohio Legislature. ODNR owns and manages more than 640,000 acres of land including 75 state parks, 23 state forests, 136 state nature preserves and 150 wildlife areas. Clear Creek Metro Park
Clear Creek Metro Park is a nature preserve located at 185 Clear Creek Road in Rockbridge, Ohio, just off U.S. Route 33. It is part of the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve
Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve is a deep, cool gorge, which is only 100 feet wide in places and is considered by some to be the deepest in Ohio. Desonier State Nature Preserve
Marie J. Desonier State Nature Preserve is located in eastern Athens County, Ohio, United States. It is heavily forested, on Jordan Run near its headwaters, in Deep Hollow. The preserve features a loop trail, the Oak Ridge Trail, with two footbridges. This trail can be hiked in a two-mile loop, or as a 2.5-mile loop. Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve
Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve is located in Jackson County, Ohio, United States, just northwest of and outside the city of Jackson. It is owned and administered by the State Division of Natural Areas and Preserves and comprises . The nature preserve is centered at Lake Katharine, an artificial lake. Riddle State Nature Preserve
Hawk Woods is an old-growth forest located in central Athens County, Ohio, United States, outside the city of Athens. The forest comprises of foothills in the Allegheny Plateau region. Rockbridge State Nature Preserve
Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is a nature reserve featuring a natural bridge located in the unincorporated community of Rockbridge in Hocking County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Hocking Hills region, but the sandstone that forms the natural bridge is located lower in the stratigraphic sequence than that which forms most of the region's notable features.
