Oatley Bay
Oatley Bay is a bay located in the Georges River Council, surrounded by the suburbs of Oatley, Hurstville Grove and Connells Point. The bay is part of the Georges River waterway. It is popular for cycling, walking, children's play, picnics and barbecues, and is also used for boating. The area around the bay is built-up. Reserves and parks in the bay include: Poulton Park, Redin Place Reserve, Oatley Point Reserve, Oatley Pleasure Grounds and Moore Reserve. The bay has a shallow depth, averaging about 1.5 metres, and is the end point for all run-off from the approximately 468-504 hectare Oatley Bay catchment. There is a ramp for access by boat. Ecology The bay contains endangered flora and ecological communities, with more than two hundred plant species recorded. Moore Reserve, Oatley
Moore Reserve is a 14.2 hectare park surrounded by the Sydney suburbs of Oatley, Mortdale and Hurstville Grove. It is the second largest public space in the Municipality of Kogarah. Originally part of the north west arm, Moore Reserve was created in the 1960s by infilling with mud dredged from Oatley Bay. At the time the existing natural waterway, Renown Creek, was destroyed and ultimately replaced by concrete pipes. An artificial wetland was constructed in 2001 which uses natural processes to treat 95% of all stormwater runoff from the 125 hectare catchment before it enters Oatley Bay. Oyster is the common name for a number of different families of salt-water bivalve molluscs that live in marine or brackish habitats. Mangroves
A mangrove is a shrub or tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Mangroves are taxonomically diverse, as a result of convergent evolution in several plant families. They occur worldwide in the tropics and subtropics and even some temperate coastal areas, mainly between latitudes 30° N and 30° S, with the greatest mangrove area within 5° of the equator. Mangrove plant families first appeared during the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene epochs, and became widely distributed in part due to the movement of tectonic plates. Oatley Pleasure Grounds
Oatley Pleasure Grounds is a bush park located in Oatley, New South Wales. The whole park is . History A private park was started by Harry Linmark before 1934. A band, weekly on Sunday, previously held entertaining shows at the park. Chinese New Year celebrations and picnics hosted by the Salvation Army were held in the park. A zoo was constructed in the park which held animals, such as kangaroos, monkeys, snakes and emus. Around the same period a wine bar was also constructed, but it was noisy and received complaints. Later in 1934, Kogarah Council purchased the park, extended it and renamed it. Oatley Point Reserve
Oatley Point Reserve is a reserve located in the Sydney suburb of Oatley. It has panoramic views of Georges River and Oatley Bay, as well as some of the highest quality remnant coastal forest in the Municipality of Kogarah. Urbanization
