Oakleigh is a heritage-listed residence and former boarding house at 18 Ward Avenue in the inner city Sydney suburb of Potts Point, New South Wales, Potts Point in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The Oakleigh Garden Historic District is a historic district in Mobile, Alabama, United States. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on 13 April 1972. It is centered on Washington Square and was originally bounded by Government, Marine, Texas, and Ann Streets. A boundary increase on 30 January 1991 increased the boundaries to Rapier Avenue, Selma, Broad, and Texas Streets. The district covers and contains 288 contributing buildings. The buildings range in age from the 1820s to the 1940s with most in a variety of 19th-century architectural styles. Oakleigh Racecourse Railway Station
Sandown Park railway station is located on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines in Victoria, Australia. It serves the south-eastern Melbourne suburb of Springvale, and it opened in 1889 as Oakleigh Racecourse. It was renamed Sandown Park in 1892. History Named after Sandown Park in Surrey, England, the station was built to service the nearby Sandown Racecourse. In addition to the two main lines, there was a signal box and booking office, and two sidings each over 600 metres long on the eastern side of the tracks, for the stabling of special race services. The station had no platform on the Up track, instead having an island platform on the Down track, with the other face serving one of the sidings on the eastern side. By 1937, a crossover at the Down end of the station was removed and, in 1943, the sidings that adjoined the back platform were abolished. Oakleigh East is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 16 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Monash local government area. New Oakleigh Mine
The New Oakleigh Mine was a thermal coal mine in the Moreton Basin. The mine was located north of Rosewood in South East Queensland, Australia. It was one of two operating mines in an area with a rich coal mining history. Thermal coal was extracted from the open pit by trucks, excavators and front-end loaders. Mining operations began at the site in 1948. New Hope Coal the owners of the mine, were to cease operations sometime around 2009. The Oakleigh District Football Club is a semi-professional Australian rules football club in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. The club currently participates in Division 3 of the Eastern Football Netball League. History Late in 1949 a meeting was held in Oakleigh Mechanics Institute Hall in Drummond Street Oakleigh to solve the problem of having no open age side to for all mature players to continue on their careers. The only open age side in Oakleigh area besides the Oakleigh (VFA) club was Oakleigh United but they had just disbanded. The club had left 50 pounds to any club starting up an open age side. Oakleigh District Football Club was formed and accepted into the Caulfield-Oakleigh District Football League. Oakleigh (VFA) was asked for assistance but they gave none. Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham. With former Essendon star player and coach, and future Fitzroy and Carlton coach Frank Maher in charge they won a premiership in just their second season with a 9-point win over Northcote in a very spiteful game, 9.6 (60) to 7.9 (51). W.O.S. Thorne, more generally known as Oakleigh Thorne (July 31, 1866 − May 23, 1948), was an American businessperson, a publisher of tax guides, a banker, and a philanthropist. Among his early ventures were the consolidation of brickyards on the Hudson River, and later he was president of the National Switch and Signal Company and Westinghouse Electric's vice president. In 1900 he came to New York City as vice president of the International Banking and Trust Company, becoming president. That company became the Trust Company of America, of which Thorne was serving as president. He helped the company survive a bank run during the Panic of 1907, securing the backing of J. Pierpont Morgan and European sources. He served as a director of Wells Fargo & Company from 1902 to 1918.
