Oakland Subdivision
The Oakland Subdivision is a Union Pacific Railroad line in the U.S. state of California. It extends from Stockton, California, Stockton in the east to Oakland, California, Oakland, crossing the Diablo Range at Altamont Pass and traversing Niles Canyon. The line was originally built by the Western Pacific Railroad as the final Pacific leg of their Feather River Route — it was acquired by Union Pacific upon their purchase of Southern Pacific Transportation Company, Southern Pacific. For its length, the line largely parallels the route of the First transcontinental railroad, the Western Pacific Railroad (1862–1870), though the Subdivision was laid out decades after the Western Pacific. The Western Pacific Railroad (1862-1870) was formed in 1862 to build a railroad from Sacramento, California, to the San Francisco Bay, the westernmost portion of the First transcontinental railroad. Union City is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area in Alameda County, California, United States, located approximately south of Oakland, from San Francisco, and north of San Jose. Fruitvale (originally Fruit Vale and formerly Brays) is a neighborhood in Oakland, California, United States. It is located approximately 4 miles (6.44 km) southeast of Downtown, and is home to the city's largest Hispanic population, with Hispanics constituting 53.8% of Fruitvale's population. Lathrop is a city located south of Stockton in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The 2022 California Census reported that Lathrop's population was 30,659. The city is located in the San Joaquin Valley in Northern California at the intersection of Interstate 5 and California State Route 120. The Niles Subdivision is a Union Pacific railway line which runs from Oakland, California to Newark, California in the East Bay. Route The line largely consists of the original Western Pacific East Bay main line between Oakland and Niles. The line between Newark and Fremont was originally laid out by the South Pacific Coast Railroad. The line features a street running section along Embarcadero in Oakland.
