Oakengates Athletic Football Club was a football club based in Oakengates, Shropshire. History Earliest records of Oakengates Town are from as early as 1886–87 when they lifted the Shropshire Junior Cup. In 1923–24 they entered the Birmingham and District League. A cup win was soon to follow in the 1926–27 season when they lifted the Shropshire Senior Cup. The reserves were also successful in these times with a win in the Junior Cup in 1928–29. The first team won the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1929–30 beating Kidderminster Harriers 3–1 and nearly won the Birmingham and District League in 1930–31 only to lose the title on goal difference. They went on to lift the Shropshire Senior Cup again in season 1930–31 and retained it in 1931–32. Oakengates won the Commander Ethelston Cup in season 1978–79, a feat which they repeated in the 1988–89 season. The Shropshire County Premier Football League was an English association football league based in the county of Shropshire. The league, usually known as the Shropshire County League, was founded in 1950 and in the final season had two divisions which sat at levels 13 and 14 of the English football league system. It was dissolved in May 2012 and all member clubs transferred to a new, larger Mercian Regional Football League for the 2012–13 season. Clubs who won this league were promoted to the West Midlands (Regional) League (all champions 2008–2012 were), although on occasion teams (such as Shifnal Town in 1993) instead moved into the Midland Football Combination. Oakengates is a constituent town and civil parish in Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire, England. The towns parish population was recorded as 8,517 in the 2001 census. Etymology The name is not derived from "oak" or "gates" but is derived from the Ancient Brythonic name for the valley which was Usc-con, meaning The Lake(Usc(water) and the confluence(Cond) of two streams (see Cartlidge), and from the Old Norse gata, path; see gh- in Indo-European roots. meaning boundary or Road. Hadley is a village and part of the new town of Telford in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and the ceremonial county of Shropshire, England.
