Ozurgeti City Center
Ozurgeti ( ka, ოზურგეთი ) is the capital of the western Georgian province of Guria. It was formerly known as Macharadze or Makharadze (named in honor of Filipp Makharadze). It is a regional center of tea and hazelnut processing. Ozurgeti is also administrative center of Ozurgeti District. Geography Ozurgeti is above sea level. Most of the town is located between the Bzhuzhi and Natanebi rivers. The Natanebi is a subterranean river in Ozurgeti, with a good deal of the city built on top of it, while the Bzhuzhi flows above ground. The city is bounded by hills in the north and south. Ozurgeti sits on a slope that was leveled into three broad terraces: The market district, containing bazaars and small shops, as well as a plaza overlooked by a statue of a mermaid, is on the lowermost level. Porfiry Grigorevich Chanchibadze ( ka, პორფილე ჩანჩიბაძე, russian: Порфи́рий Гео́ргиевич Чанчиба́дзе); 13 December 1901 - 14 March 1950) was a Soviet Colonel General and a Hero of the Soviet Union. Biography Chanchibadze was born in Ozurgeti, present-day Georgia. He participated in the Russian Civil War. At the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, he was in command of the 120th Rifle Regiment in the Far East, which was transferred in July 1941 to the Western Front. In July 1941, he was appointed commander of the 107th Motor Rifle Division, which, as part of the 30th Army, fought in the Battle of Smolensk (1941), defended itself in October 1941, and from December 1941 launched a counteroffensive during the Battle of Moscow. Ekvtime Takaishvili (also spelled Taqaishvili) () (January 5, 1862 – February 21, 1953) was a Georgian historian, archaeologist and public benefactor. Born in the village of Likhauri in the western Georgian province of Guria to a local nobleman Svimon Takaishvili, he graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1887. From 1887 to 1917, he lectured on the history of Georgia at various prestigious schools in Tbilisi, including the Tbilisi Gymnasium for Nobility. During these years, he was actively involved in extensive scholarly activities and chaired, from 1907 to 1921, the Society of History and Ethnography of Georgia. The House of Gurieli () was a Georgian princely (''mtavari'') family and a ruling dynasty (dukes) of the southwestern Georgian province of Guria, which was autonomous and later, for a few centuries, independent. A few ducal rulers of the dynasty also rose in the 17th-18th centuries to be kings of the whole western Caucasus in place of the hereditary Bagrationi kings of Imereti. History Bearing a hereditary title for governors (Eristavi) of Guria since the mid-13th century, Gurieli (literally, "of Guria") was adopted as a dynastic name by the Vardanisdze family (ვარდანისძე), hereditary rulers of Svaneti (a highland province in western Georgia).
