Oxford Township, Butler County, Ohio
Oxford Township, also known as the College Township, is one of thirteen townships in Butler County, Ohio, United States. It is located in the northwestern corner of the county, where it meets Preble County, Ohio, and Union County, Indiana. The city of Oxford, the home of Miami University, is located in the township. It had a population of 25,469 at the 2020 census. History The eleventh in order of creation, Oxford Township was erected from Milford Township by the Butler County Commissioners on August 5, 1811. The site was chosen by the State of Ohio for a college in order to fulfill the unkept promise of John Cleves Symmes. Franklin County is a county on the eastern border of the U.S. state of Indiana. In the 2020 United States Census, the county population was 22,785. The county seat is the town of Brookville. Franklin County is part of the Cincinnati, OH–KY–IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The only incorporated city in Franklin County is Batesville, which lies mostly in adjoining Ripley County. Geography Franklin County lies on the eastern edge of Indiana; its eastern border abuts the western border of Ohio. John Cleves Symmes
John Cleves Symmes (July 21, 1742February 26, 1814) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New Jersey, and later a pioneer in the Northwest Territory. He was also the father-in-law of President William Henry Harrison and, thereby, the great-grandfather of President Benjamin Harrison. Early life He was the son of the Rev. Timothy Symmes (1715–1756) and Mary Cleves (died ) of Suffolk County on Long Island. John was born in Riverhead in what was then the Province of New York, a part of British America, on July 21, 1742. Symmes was educated as a lawyer. Career Symmes supported the revolution, becoming chairman of the Sussex County, New Jersey Committee of Safety in 1774. When the Revolutionary war began in earnest, he served as Colonel of the 3rd Regiment of the Sussex County militia from 1777 to 1780. Milford Township, one of thirteen townships in the county, is located in north-central Butler County, Ohio, United States, between Oxford and Middletown. The township had a population of 3,550 at the 2010 census, up from 3,254 in 2000. Excluding the now-defunct village of Somerville, 3,269 people lived in the unincorporated part of the township.
