Pontypool ( cy, Pont-y-pŵl ) is a town and the administrative centre of the county borough of Torfaen, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire in South Wales. It has a population of 28,970. Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. The 1970s line-up, featuring singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, was among the pioneers of progressive rock. 1984 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1984 Embassy World Darts Championship was held from 31 December 1983 to 7 January 1984 at Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke-on-Trent. Eric Bristow made up for his defeat against Keith Deller in the previous year's final by winning his third world title having dropped just one set in the entire tournament. He beat Finn Jensen, Rick Ney, Peter Locke and John Lowe before defeating Dave Whitcombe in the final by 7 sets to 1. Deller suffered a shock first-round defeat to 1978 semi-finalist Nicky Virachkul, who eventually lost to Whitcombe in the quarter-finals. Whitcombe then came from 4–2 down to beat Jocky Wilson 6–5 in the semi-finals. In a famous moment at the end of the match, Wilson drunkenly fell down on the stage before congratulating Whitcombe. Gerry Haywood
Gerry Haywood (4 May 1946 – 12 September 2016) was an English professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. He competed in the 1984 BDO World Darts Championship, defeating the Welsh player Owen Thomas 2–0 in the first round, but was defeated 4–0 in the second round by American Nicky Virachkul. Haywood also played in the 1984 Winmau World Masters but lost in the first round to Bob Anderson. Winmau World Masters
The World Masters is one of the longest-running and most prestigious of the BDO/WDF tournaments, which began in 1974. The tournament is sponsored by darts board manufacturer, Winmau. The World Masters was unusual in darts in that its sets are the best of 3 legs (first to 2) rather than the standard best of 5 legs (first to 3). It was previously the final leg of the BDO's Grand Slam title of televised majors, along with the BDO World Darts Championship, International Darts League and World Darts Trophy, until the latter two tournaments were axed in 2008. The champion is referred to as the World Master. After the collapse of the British Darts Organisation in September 2020, the World Darts Federation announced plans to launch the WDF World Masters. Keith Deller
Keith Kelvin Deller (born 24 December 1959) is an English former professional darts player best known for winning the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship and Unipart British Professional Championship in 1987. He was the first qualifier ever to win the championship and remains one of the youngest champions in history. For his world championship win, Deller used 18-gram spring-loaded darts, later banned for tournament play but now legal again. Career BDO Deller's victory over Eric Bristow in the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship by 6 sets to 5 was probably the biggest upset in the history of the championship. He had also beaten world number 3 John Lowe in the quarter finals and defending champion and world number 2 Jocky Wilson in the semi-final to become the only player in history to defeat the world's top three ranked players in the World Championship. Eric Burden
Eric Burden is a former Welsh professional darts player who competed in the 1980s and 1990s. Career Burden played in the BDO World Darts Championship four times and lost in the first round each time. He lost in 1989 to Russell Stewart, in 1991 to Bob Sinnaeve, in 1994 to Leo Laurens and in 1996 to Per Skau. Burden also played in the Winmau World Masters three times, again losing in the first round each time. In 1985, he lost to Tony Payne, in 1993 to George Dalgleish and in 1994 to Les Wallace. Despite his poor record on televised majors, Burden fared better on floor events, reaching the final of the 1990 WDF Europe Cup, losing to Phil Taylor and the 1995 WDF World Cup, losing to Martin Adams.
