Owen Roe McGovern
Owen Roe McGovern (December 1917 – 2 May 2011) was a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Cavan county team, winning two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals in 1947 and '48. Playing career A native of Swanlinbar, he could play at corner-back or half-back. He was a member of the great Cavan squad which won the All-Ireland Final in the Polo Grounds, New York City in 1947. In the 1948 All-Ireland title success Owen Roe replaced John Joe O'Reilly as a second-half substitute in defence. The following year he started at left corner-back in the Final, but Meath denied Cavan the three in a row. He was a member of the Cavan squad when they won their first National Football League title in the 1947/48 season and he lined out at right half-back when Cavan reclaimed the National Football League title in 1949/50. The Meath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste na Mí) or Meath GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Meath, as well as for Meath county teams. Football County team The first notable Meath team was the Pierce O'Mahony's club from Navan that represented the county in the All-Ireland final of 1895, in the days when the competition was played between the champion clubs from each county. O'Mahony's lost to Arravale Rovers of Tipperary by 0-4 to 0-3. The county had to wait until 1939 for its next appearance at All-Ireland level, this time losing narrowly to Kerry by 2-5 to 2-3 in the final. Cavan ( ; ) is the county town of County Cavan in Ireland. The town lies in Ulster, near the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The town is bypassed by the main N3 road that links Dublin (to the south) with Enniskillen, Ballyshannon and Donegal Town (to the north). Irish Army
The Irish Army, known simply as the Army ( ga, an tArm), is the land component of the Defence Forces of Ireland.The Defence Forces are made up of the Permanent Defence Forces – the standing branches – and the Reserve Defence Forces. John Joe O'Reilly (Gaelic Footballer)
John Joe O'Reilly (1918 – 1952) was a legendary Gaelic footballer who played for the Cavan county team. He is the only man to lead a team to All Ireland glory outside of Ireland, having captained the Breffni men to victory against Kerry in the iconic 1947 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final played at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Playing career Born at the Derries Upper, Killeshandra, County Cavan, his father was Big John O'Reilly who played as goalkeeper on the Cavan county team and his mother was Sarah Anne. After early successes with St Patrick's College, Cavan and his club, Cornafean, he captained the Cavan county team, which won All-Ireland Senior Football Championships in 1947 (at the New York City Polo Grounds) and 1948, having also played on three losing sides in the final. Swanlinbar GAA
Swanlinbar St Mary's is a Gaelic football club based in Swanlinbar, County Cavan, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1904. The club won their first championship title in 1985, winning the Cavan Junior Football Championship, winning it again in 1998 and 2006. After losing the junior final in 2009, Swad came back in 2010 to win the championship for the fourth time. Swanlinbar went on to reach the final of Ulster Junior Club Football Championship, but Corduff won the match by five points. However, Corduff played an ineligible player and after a successful appeal, Swanlinbar were crowned Ulster Junior champions. The club would go on to beat Ballinabrackey in the All-Ireland semi final to qualify for the final of the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship.
