Owen Paulsen
Owen Paulsen is a New Zealand jurist, who served as Chief Justice of Tonga from 2015 to 2019. Since August 2019 he has been an associate justice of the High Court of New Zealand. Paulsen was educated at Shirley Boys' High School and the University of Canterbury, and later at the University of Auckland. He worked as a solicitor and later a partner for Harman & Co, and then as a member of the Employment Tribunal. He later worked for the law firm Cavell Leitch. In January 2015 he was appointed Chief Justice of Tonga, replacing Michael Dishington Scott. As Chief Justice he quashed the sacking of Tonga Broadcasting Commission directors 'Eseta Fusitu'a and Tunakaimanu Fielakepa, and oversaw the corruption trial of government minister ʻEtuate Lavulavu Etuate Lavulavu (born 1958 or 1959) is a Tongan politician and former member of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga for Vavau. Michael Dishington Scott
Michael Dishington Scott was Chief Justice of Tonga. Scott is a British national with a long career in the Pacific. He has previously served as a judge in Kiribati and the Solomon Islands, and served for 14 years as a judge on the High Court of Fiji. As a High Court judge in Fiji, in ''Yabaki v President of the Republic of the Fiji Islands'', he ruled that the interim government established in the wake of the 2000 Fijian coup d'état was legal. This ruling was later overturned on appeal. From 2004 to 2007 he was a judge of the Fijian Court of Appeal. He was appointed Chief Justice of Tonga in August 2010, replacing Tony Ford. He assumed the role on 27 September 2010. He was replaced by Owen Paulsen in January 2015. ʻEtuate Lavulavu
Etuate Lavulavu (born 1958 or 1959) is a Tongan politician and former member of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga for Vavau. He was stripped of his seat in 2016 after being convicted of bribery, precipitating the 2016 Vavau 16 by-election. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University–Hawaii followed by a Master of Arts from Brigham Young University in Utah. He publicly claimed to have a PhD from the University of Edenvale, a US diploma mill, and began referring to himself as "Professor". He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 2002 election. During his first term he was arrested in Utah, USA in October 2003 over a 1997 immigration scam. In 2004 he was convicted after pleading guilty to two counts of illegal use of a birth certificate. In 2003 Lavulavu apologised to the House after an altercation with fellow MP Akilisi Pohiva. Tunakaimanu Fielakepa
Tunakaimanu Fielakepa is the foremost authority on ''koloa'', the unique hand-made textiles produced by women in Tonga. She promotes the revitalisation of traditional techniques and practices both in Tonga and in other Pacific Island communities. Early life Tunakaimanu Fielakepa was born in 1936. She was one of the first Tongan women to receive a western-style education, and became a teacher in 1958. She married Longolongoʻatumai Aleamotuʻa, Lord Fielakepa, in 1959 and after his death was able to use the title, the Dowager Lady Fielakepa. Her son, Baron Fielakepa, became a government minister and Tonga's Lord Chamberlain, the most senior officer of the Royal Household. Career From 1975 to 1978 Fielakepa worked in the Ministry of Education, serving as the Chief Education Officer. Michael Hargreaves Whitten
Michael Hargreaves Whitten is an Australian jurist. Since 2 September 2019 he has served as Lord Chief Justice of Tonga. Whitten grew up in Mackay, Queensland and is the son of a butcher and a boiler marker. He worked as a public defender in Brisbane from 1986–88, and then as a clerk for a Queensland District Court judge from 1988 - 1989. In 1990 he was admitted to the Queensland bar, and practiced criminal and family law. He moved to Melbourne in 1996, where he practiced civil and commercial law. In 2015 he was appointed a Queen's Counsel. In July 2019 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Tonga as Lord Chief Justice, replacing Owen Paulsen. His term as Chief Justice began on 2 September 2019. 'Eseta Fusitu'a
Eseta Fuafolau Vakapuna a Ngu Fusitua, styled Dowager Lady Fusitua is a Tongan former teacher, government official and Cabinet Minister. She was the first Tongan woman to obtain a bachelor's degree. Early life and education Eseta Fusituan obtained an undergraduate degree from Auckland University in New Zealand in 1964. A year later she obtained a New Zealand teaching diploma. In 1967 she married Siaosi Alokuoulu Wycliffe Fusitua, a large landowner on Niuafoou island who would be made Lord Fusitua in 1981 and represented the Niuas Nobles' constituency in the Legislative Assembly of Tonga. They had two children. Her husband died in 2014 at the age of 87, from which time she became known as the Dowager Lady Fusitua. Fusitua was an assistant teacher at Tonga High School from 1965 to 1967, before becoming a member of staff of St. Edmunds College in Canberra as a history teacher in 1973.
