Owen Edwards (broadcaster)
Owen Edwards (26 December 1933 – 30 August 2010) was a Welsh broadcaster, and the first chief executive of the Welsh-language television channel S4C, the fourth television channel in Wales, a post he held from 1981-89. He was a presenter on the early Welsh-language television programme ''Dewch i Mewn'' during the 1950s. From 1961 to 1966 he presented ''Heddiw'', the BBC's early evening Welsh-language news magazine programme. Life Edwards was born in Aberystwyth; his father was Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards, founder of Urdd Gobaith Cymru (Welsh League of Youth); Owen Edwards' grandfather was the historian and literary scholar Sir Owen Morgan Edwards. ''Heddiw'' (English: ''Today'') was a television news programme in the Welsh language, broadcast by BBC Television between 1961 and 1982. The programme ended when all Welsh-language programming was transferred to the new channel S4C. Annie Davies was the show's first producer (and later editor). Presenters of the programme included Owen Edwards, Robin Jones and Sulwyn Thomas. Ifan Ab Owen Edwards
Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards (25 July 1895 – 23 January 1970) was a Welsh academic, writer and film-maker, best known as the founder of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, the Welsh League of Youth. He was born at Tremaran, Llanuwchllyn, Merionethshire, the son of Sir Owen Morgan Edwards, and was educated at Bala Grammar School and University of Wales, Aberystwyth. After military service on the Western Front during World War I, he studied at Lincoln College, Oxford, taking a degree in history. He worked as a teacher and lecturer from 1920 to 1948, when he gave up the profession to concentrate on his work for the Urdd. In 1922, Edwards wrote a letter to the periodical ''Cymru'r Plant'', which led to the founding of the Urdd, and the first Urdd recreational camp was held at Llanuwchllyn in 1928, under his direction. Urdd Gobaith Cymru () (known as the Urdd) is a national voluntary youth organisation, which claimed over 56,000 members in 2019 aged between 8 and 25 years old. It provides opportunities for children and young people across Wales to take part in a range of experiences through the medium of Welsh. Owen Morgan Edwards
Sir Owen Morgan Edwards (26 December 1858 – 15 May 1920) was a Welsh historian, educationalist and writer. He is often known as O. M. Edwards. Biography Owen Edwards was born in Llanuwchllyn near Bala, the eldest son of Owen and Beti Edwards. He gives a vivid description of his early education in his autobiography ''Clych Adgof'' ("Bells of Remembrance") published in 1906. Llanuwchllyn was then and remains a strongly Welsh-speaking area, but the Welsh Not was in use at the local school and usually found itself round Owen's neck, as a punishment for speaking Welsh. After studying at Bala and University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating with a pass degree in 1883. He then spent a year at the University of Glasgow studying philosophy before studying at Balliol College, Oxford, from 1884 to 1887, winning all the university's three main prizes for history. Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth
Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth is a Welsh language primary school in the university town of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion, Wales. It was established as a private school in 1939 by Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards and was originally named Ysgol Gymraeg yr Urdd. The school was the first Welsh-medium school in Wales, the first headteacher being prominent dramatist Norah Isaac. The school originally had seven pupils, but has grown significantly since then and now educates over 400 children. The school expanded rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s as parents began to see the academic value in bilingual education. Although 95% of the students speak Welsh to a first language level, only 65% come from homes where Welsh is the main language spoken.
