Owen Brown, Columbia, Maryland
Owen Brown is one of the ten villages in Columbia, Maryland, United States, established in 1972. Neighborhoods in the village include Dasher Green, Elkhorn and Hopewell. Owen Brown lies south and east of the town center. The village contains the Lake Elkhorn, with a walking path of two miles (3 km) and a picnic pavilion in the park. History Prior to the development of Columbia, an area road was known as Owen Brown Road, named for local postmaster and store owner Owen T. Brown who had once lived on it. Due to its proximity, Rouse Company planners used Owen Brown as an early working name for the village. The name stuck, and became the permanent name of the village when it opened in 1972. Lake Elkhorn is named for the Elkhorn branch of the Little Patuxent River; Elk Horn Farms was also the name of the Dasher farm. Street names are taken from the works of Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Rouse Company, founded by Hunter Moss and James W. Rouse in 1939, was a publicly held shopping mall and community developer from 1956 until 2004, when General Growth Properties (GGP) purchased the company. Beginnings - Moss-Rouse Company The Moss-Rouse Company was founded as a FHA mortgage company with a loan from Hunter Moss's sister. Rouse leveraged his knowledge as loan guarantee specialist at the Federal Housing Administration to establish a Baltimore-based mortgage company specializing in FHA backed loans. Moss-Rouse hired a World War Two Navy friend, Churchill G. Carey from Connecticut General, who in turn provided capital for future projects. The Ryland Group, Inc. was a company engaged in home construction based in Westlake Village, California. In 2015, it was the 5th largest homebuilder in the United States. In October 2015, the company merged with Standard Pacific Homes to form CalAtlantic Homes. Vachel Lindsay
Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (; November 10, 1879 – December 5, 1931) was an American poet. He is considered a founder of modern ''singing poetry,'' as he referred to it, in which verses are meant to be sung or chanted. Early years Lindsay was born in Springfield, Illinois where his father, Vachel Thomas Lindsay, worked as a medical doctor and had amassed considerable financial resources. John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 – September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Dasher Farm
The Dasher Farm is a historic farm located in Columbia, Howard County, Maryland, now part of the Rouse Company land development. Hammond Dorsey operated Elkhorn plantation on the site. He split the property among his heirs into 90-acre parcels, one of which was purchased by Maureen and Dora Dasher in 1919 creating the Dasher Farm. M.E. Dasher and sons expanded the property to 480 acres in 1949. A stone springhouse with stucco is the sole remaining historical building, left in an unpreserved state. The Dasher Green neighborhood of the Village of Owen Brown is named for the 670-acre Dasher family farm purchased in May 1963 by one of the Rouse Company land acquisition entities. In 1971 the stone farm house was destroyed by fire. The farm was systematically reduced in size between 1971 and 1978, with the last parcel sold for development in 1996.
