Ouwerkerk
Ouwerkerk is a village in the southwest Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland about 60 km south of Rotterdam. History Ouwerkerk is the oldest village of the former island of Duiveland, possibly founded in the eleventh century. The village got its current name after a church was built in Nieuwerkerk. The name of Ouwerkerk before the establishment of Nieuwerkerk is unknown. Ouwerkerk was built as a rundling with a church in the center of the surviving Ring. The medieval tower of the church, originally dedicated to Gertrude the Great, was blown up by German troops in 1945, in a blast that seriously damaged the rest of the church. After World War II, the remains of the church and tower were demolished. In 1956 a new church was built. In 1957 the separate tower was completed. Watersnoodmuseum
The Watersnoodmuseum or Flood Museum in Ouwerkerk, Netherlands is the "National Knowledge and Remembrance Centre for the Floods of 1953" and offers an in-depth picture of the events during and after the flood of 1 February 1953. The museum was officially opened on 2 April 2001. The museum also educates visitors about water safety, and the museum collects global knowledge about flooding. The museum is located on the dike south of the village of Ouwerkerk; it is housed in the four caissons used to close the last gap in the dike following the flood. History 1993–2002: Beginnings After the 40-year commemoration of the flood in 1993, a working group was formed under the leadership of Ria Geluk. Schouwen-Duiveland
Schouwen-Duiveland () is a municipality and an island in the southwestern Netherlands province of Zeeland. The municipality has 33,737 inhabitants (1 January 2016) and covers an area of (of which is water). The northside of the island has two fixed connections to Goeree-Overflakkee, the Brouwersdam and the Grevelingen. The southside has two fixed connections to cross the Oosterschelde to North Beveland, the Stormvloed Kering or Oosterscheldedam, part of the Delta Works and the Zeeland Bridge. The island is mostly flat and is, besides a small area, below the sea level. On the western tip is a dune whose highest point is about 42 meters above sea level. Joost Berman
Joost Berman (9 January 1793 – 18 March 1855) was a Dutch lawyer, judge, politician, poet, nonfiction writer, and editor. Life Joost Berman was born in Ouwerkerk as the son of Maarten Berman (1769–1832) en Geertruida der Weduwen (1772?–1844). Along with some contemporaries from an evolving rural farming elite, he managed to complete his studies at the French and Latin schools. When he went on to study law at Leiden University (1814–1817), he was the first of these "farmer boys" to acquire higher education. After graduating, Joost Berman worked as an attorney-at-law, attorney in Zierikzee. Subsequently he was employed by the local court, serving as Assistant Clerk to the Court, Court clerk, Clerk to the Court, Magistrate, Judge of Peace, and from 1838 as Canton (country subdivision), Canton Judge. Duiveland
Duiveland is the name of a former island and a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The island of Duiveland was joined to Schouwen in 1610, forming the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. It is the eastern part of the current island. The municipality of Duiveland was created in 1961 from the former municipalities of Nieuwerkerk, Ouwerkerk, and Oosterland. Nieuwerkerk
Nieuwerkerk is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 23 km south of Hellevoetsluis. Nieuwerkerk was a separate municipality until 1961, when the new municipality of Duiveland was created. History Nieuwerkerk was created in the 12th century. It was a split-off from Ouwerkerk. The fifteenth-century Protestant church, originally dedicated to John (evangelist), has an 6 sided tower. It was rebuilt in 1975 on the foundations of the original tower, which was blown up in 1945 by the Germans. During the North Sea flood of 1953, approximately 265 of the 1,800 residents drowned or went missing. The Zesde Klasse ( en, Sixth Class) was formerly the tenth and lowest tier of football in the Netherlands for most of the districts and the eighth tier of Dutch amateur football. The league was divided into 6 divisions, 4 played on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Easter Scheldt
The Eastern Scheldt ( nl, Oosterschelde) is a former estuary in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands, between Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen on the north and Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland on the south. It also features the largest national park in the Netherlands, founded in 2002. Landscape and history During the Roman Era it was the major mouth of the Scheldt River. Before the St. Felix's Flood of 1530, it flowed north as a river from the east end of the Westerschelde, turned west a little west of Bergen op Zoom, and then west along the north edge of what is now the Verdronken Land van Reimerswaal, and after that widened into an estuary. Later parts of that lost land were reclaimed, restricting part of the connection to the Scheldt River to a narrow channel called the Kreekrak, which silted up and became unnavigable.
