Outdoor Research is a Seattle-based manufacturer of technical apparel and gear for outdoor sports, including alpinism, rock and ice climbing, backpacking, paddling, and backcountry skiing and snowboarding. Company History Ron Gregg was a nuclear physicist and mountaineer who left his science career in 1980 in order to join an expedition up North America’s highest peak, Denali. After enduring an open bivouac at 12,500 feet with temperatures reaching -20°F, Gregg’s climbing partner suffered from frostbitten feet and was subsequently evacuated by helicopter. This event inspired and challenged Gregg to find a solution to cold, wet, and exposed feet in precarious mountain environments. Gregg founded Outdoor Research the following year and released the company’s first product; the X-Gaiter. In 1982, REI placed the Outdoor Research First Aid Kit on the back cover of its catalog. Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park
Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park is one of the oldest provincial parks in British Columbia, established in 1922. The park has an area of and is located in the Selkirk Mountains in the West Kootenays region of BC. The park has three glaciers (Kokanee, Caribou, and Woodbury) that feed over 30 alpine lakes which are the headwaters of many creeks. There are five access roads entering the park, which were developed as mining and forestry roads along the major drainages. The nearest towns are Nelson, Ainsworth, Kaslo and Slocan City (access is primarily from Nelson and Kaslo). Pierre Trudeau's youngest son, Michel, was killed in an avalanche in 1998 while skiing at the park. Sarah Hueniken
Sarah Hueniken is a Canadian Alpine Guide and professional ice climber. In 2015, Hueniken became the first North American woman to climb an M14-rated mixed climbing route, with her ascent of ''Mustaing P-51'' (M14-). In January 2015, Hueniken also became the second person to scale the ice-covered rock wall next to the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls. She followed her partner, Canadian climber Will Gadd. Hans Florine (born June 18, 1964) is an American rock climber, who holds the record for the number of ascents of Yosemite Valleys El Capitan and is known for holding the speed record on '' The Nose'' of Yosemite’s El Capitan 8 different times. Hans' last speed record on The Nose was accomplished with Alex Honnold for climbing '' The Nose'' in 2:23:46 (2 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds), on June 17, 2012. In addition to climbing El Capitan over 175 times, Hans also holds the record for the number of ascents of ''The Nose'' climbing it more than 111 times. Beth Rodden
Beth Rodden (born April 5, 1980) is an American rock climber known for her ascents of hard single-pitch traditional climbing routes. She was the youngest woman to climb and is one of the only women in the world to have redpointed a traditional climbing graded climb. Rodden and fellow climber Tommy Caldwell were partners from 2000 to 2010, during which time they completed the second free ascent of '' The Nose''. In 2008, Rodden made the first ascent of ''Meltdown'', one of the hardest traditional climbs in the world and the first time in history that a female climber matched the peak of the highest climbing grades.
