''Our Latin Thing'' ( es, Nuestra Cosa Latina) was a 1972 documentary film directed by Leon Gast about the burgeoning Latin music scene in New York City. It focused on a concert put together by the management of Fania Records at Manhattan's Cheetah nightclub featuring a group of Fania artists called the Fania All-Stars. Larry Harlow Kahn (born Lawrence Ira Kahn; March 20, 1939 – August 20, 2021) was an American salsa music performer, composer, and producer. He was born into a musical American family of Jewish descent. Background Summary Harlow was born on March 20, 1939 in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, the son of Rose (''née'' Rose Sherman; 1910–1975) and Buddy Kahn (''né'' Nathan Kahn; 1909–1981), and brother of Andy Harlow (''né'' Andre H. Kahn; born 1945). In 1957 he graduated from Music & Arts High School. His mother was an opera singer with the stage name Rose Sherman in New York. Alexander Masucci (born November 11, 1949) is an American music executive, record producer, songwriter and promoter. Biography Alex Masucci was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. His brother is the late Jerry Masucci, an attorney, music executive and co-founder of Fania Records. Masucci attended Universidad de las Américas, A.C. in Mexico City. Gerald "Jerry" Masucci (October 7, 1934 – December 21, 1997) was an American attorney, businessman and was co-founder of Fania Records. Biography Masucci was born in Brooklyn, New York to Italian immigrant parents Urbano and Elvira Masucci. He was a police officer in New York City before attending, and during law school. In 1960, he graduated from New York Law School as a juris doctor. He then worked for a public relations firm in Cuba, where he became interested in Latin music. In 1964 in New York City, Masucci, then a divorce attorney, and Johnny Pacheco, a Dominican musician, established Fania Records. Cheetah (nightclub)
Cheetah was a nightclub located at 1686 Broadway near 53rd Street in Manhattan, New York City. The club opened on May 28, 1966, and closed in the 1970's. The financial backing was provided by Borden Stevenson, son of politician Adlai Stevenson, and Olivier Coquelin. Robert Hilsky and Russell Hilsky were associated with the club. According to Steven Watson's ''Factory Made: Warhol and the Sixties'', it "was the granddaddy of the big commercial disco". The musical '' Hair'' was performed at Cheetah before becoming a major production on Broadway.
