It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 7 December 1998. History Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church at Thursday Island was erected by French and Italian priests of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who had arrived on the island in October 1884. On Thursday Island they established the first Catholic mission in the Torres Strait, erecting there a small church . If this is the existing church (which is not substantiated), it is the oldest surviving building on Thursday Island. Louis-André Navarre (3 February 1836 - 16 January 1912) was a French Catholic priest active in the Pacific. A member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, he served as Vicar Apostolic of New Guinea from 1889 to 1908. He was also the Archbishop of Cyrrhus, a titular appointment. Religious life Navarre was consecrated on 30 November 1887. Later life Navarre resigned his duties in 1908 as he had become blind, but continued to live on Yule Island. He died on 16 January 1912 at the Townsville General Hospital in Queensland, Australia. He was taken ashore after falling ill on a voyage from New Guinea to Sydney. Normanton is an outback town and coastal locality in the Shire of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Normanton had a population of 1,257 people, of whom 750 (60%) identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, while the town of Normanton had a population of 1,210 people, of whom 743 (62%) identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Kaurareg (alt. Kauraraiga, plural Kauraraigalai, Kauraregale) is the name for one of the Indigenous Australian groups collectively known as Torres Strait Islander peoples, although many or most identify as Aboriginal Australians.
