Our Lady Of Guadalupe Church (Queen Creek, Arizona)
Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, located at 20615 East Ocotillo Road near the intersection of South Ellsworth Loop Road in Queen Creek, Arizona, was the first Roman Catholic Church in the town. It was completed in the late 1980s. The parish's original church sits at 20536 Octotillo, across from the current grounds. The parish was first organized in the late 1940s to serve Mexican-Americans who began moving to the area in the late 1920s and early 1930s. At first, they met in old barracks buildings courtesy of the school district, which had bought them from Williams Air Force Base for classrooms, a cafeteria, and an auditorium. The visiting priest would hold mass and hear confessions in the auditorium, and nuns used the classrooms in the summer for catechism classes. Wanting their own building, the congregation started a building fund in 1960, raising money by selling homemade goods. Queen Creek is a town in Maricopa and Pinal counties in the state of Arizona. The population was 59,519 as of the 2020 census, up from 26,361 at the 2010 census. It is a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona located in the far southeast area of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Williams Air Force Base
Williams Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force (USAF) base, located in Maricopa County, Arizona, east of Chandler, and about southeast of Phoenix. It is a designated Superfund site due to a number of soil and groundwater contaminants. It was active as a training base for both the United States Army Air Forces, as well as the USAF from 1941 until its closure in 1993. Williams was the leading pilot training facility of the USAF, supplying 25% of all pilots. Since its closure, the base has largely been annexed by the city of Mesa, Arizona. It was converted into the civilian Williams Gateway Airport, later renamed Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. The ''East Valley Tribune'' is a newspaper concentrated on cities within the East Valley region of metropolitan Phoenix, including Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. Formerly a daily newspaper, the ''Tribune'' resulted from the combination of local newspapers acquired by Cox Enterprises: The ''Tempe Daily News'', the ''Mesa Tribune'', the ''Gilbert Tribune'', the ''Scottsdale Progress'', and the ''Chandler Arizonan''. History Attorney Alfred P. Shewman and Judge W.D. Morton founded Mesa's first newspaper, the ''Evening Weekly Free Press,'' in 1891. In 1899, Judge W.D. Morton sold out to Shewman, who died in 1901.
