Our Fighting Navy
''Our Fighting Navy'' (also known as ''Torpedoed'') is a 1937 British action film directed by Norman Walker and starring Robert Douglas, Richard Cromwell and Hazel Terry. The screenplay concerns a British warship that intervenes to protect British subjects and prevent a rebellion in a South American republic. The Royal Navy, viewing the film as a recruitment opportunity, provided warships and extras. The film was made by Herbert Wilcox Productions made at Pinewood Studios.Wood p.91 The film's sets were designed by the art director Lawrence P. Williams. It was given an American release in 1938 with a reduced running time. The dialogue adaptation for the French dub version was carried out by Jean Devaivre and the film was released in France under the title in 1938. Richard Ainley
Richard Ainley (22 December 1910 – 18 May 1967) was a stage and film actor. He was born in Middlesex, England, the son of Henry Ainley and a half-brother of Anthony Ainley. Ainley made his stage debut in 1928, initially using the stage name Richard Riddle, taking his mother's maiden name. His American debut came in ''Foreigners'' at the Belasco Theater in 1939. His first motion picture appearance was in 1936 as Sylvius in '' As You Like It'', in which his father also appeared. Binkie Stuart (March 11, 1932 – August 4, 2001) was a Scottish film actress. During the 1930s she enjoyed brief fame as a child actress and was considered Britain's answer to Shirley Temple. Frederick Culley (8 March 1879 – 3 November 1942) was a British film actor. He is best remembered as the kindly Dr. Sutton in ''The Four Feathers'' (1939). His Father, Richard Palethorpe Culley, was an entrepreneur and philanthropist and his mother, Mary Widgery, came from a family of artists. Her father was landscape painter, William Widgery, and her brother, Frederick Widgery, painted in the same genre. Frederick Culley began his career in the theater, where his talent was recognized by the good reviews he usually received in the London press. He appeared briefly in silent films before entering talkies but, by 1930, Culley was already 51 years old and his roles were primarily supporting ones.
