Christian Wilhelm Ludwig Eduard Suffrian (21 January 1805, Wünsdorf, Teltow-Fläming – 18 August 1876, Bad Rehburg ) was a German entomologist who specialized in Coleoptera especially Chrysomelidae. He was a schoolteacher in Münster. Suffrian wrote many short papers and several monographs in both of which he described new species and genera. The insects of the beetle family Chrysomelidae are commonly known as leaf beetles, and include over 37,000 (and probably at least 50,000) species in more than 2,500 genera, making up one of the largest and most commonly encountered of all beetle families. Numerous subfamilies are recognized, but the precise taxonomy and systematics are likely to change with ongoing research. Ham Wall
Ham Wall is an English wetland National Nature Reserve (NNR) west of Glastonbury on the Somerset Levels. It is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Since the last Ice Age, decomposing plants in the marshes of the Brue valley in Somerset have accumulated as deep layers of peat that were commercially exploited on a large scale in the twentieth century. Consumer demand eventually declined, and in 1994 the landowners, Fisons, gave their old workings to what is now Natural England, who passed the management of the Ham Wall section to the RSPB. The Ham Wall reserve was constructed originally to provide reed bed habitat for the Eurasian bittern, which at the time was at a very low population level in the UK.
