Oudkerk
Aldtsjerk ( nl, Oudkerk) is a village on the main road from Leeuwarden to Dokkum. It is part of Tytsjerksteradiel municipality, Friesland, the Netherlands and had around 615 inhabitants as of January 2018. Its annual festivities include the ''Doarpsfeest'', including a parade, held in the summer. Local landmarks include the ''Heemstra State'', former residence of the aristocratic Sminia family. The village's main road, the ''van Sminiaweg'' is about 1.5 km long and named after the Sminia family. The village also houses a former baker who was quite famous for his ''Oranjekoek'' and ''Suikerbrood'', but who retired in 2000 when the euro was introduced. Local shopping facilities are scarce: the nearest grocery market is located in Oentsjerk, about three kilometers outside town limits. The most notable shop of the town is a bike dealership and a store called ''Bram en Jannie's'', which stands not actually in the village itself, but halfway between Aldtjserk and Oentsjerk. De Ouderkerkermolen, Aldtsjerk
De Oudkerkermolen, or Oudkerkemolen (English: ''Old Church Mill'') is a smock mill in Aldtsjerk, Friesland, Netherlands which has been restored to working order. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 35674. (Click on ''Technische gegevens'' to view.) History ''De Oudkerkermolen'' was built in 1864. On 13 March 1955 it was badly damaged in a storm. Repairs cost ƒ6,734, including new sails at ƒ3,200 and a new Archimedes' screw at ƒ1,950. The repairs were carried out by millwright De Roos of Leeuwarden. Further repairs were made to the mill in 1963. The mill drained the Oudkerkerpolder until 1970. A diesel engine formerly provided auxiliary power. It was restored in 1975. Tytsjerksteradiel
Tytsjerksteradiel () is a municipality in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. It is named after the town of Tytsjerk, whose name is derived from a person named Tiete. Tiete was a daughter of Tryn, after whom the region (Trynwâlden) is named. The other villages in Trynwâlden are also named after Tryn's children: Oentsjerk (Oene), Gytsjerk (Giete), Readtsjerk (Reade), Aldtsjerk (Âlde), Ryptsjerk (Rype). A statue of Tryn and her children is placed in Oentsjerk next to the mainroad (Rengerswei). Tsjerk is the West Frisian word for Church. Until 1989 the official name of the municipality was Tietjerksteradeel (), the Dutch name; the current official name is West Frisian. The largest village in the municipality is Burgum. The Protestant church of Aldtsjerk or Saint Paul's churchAlle middeleeuwse kerken: van Harlingen tot Wilhelmshaven, P Karstkarel, p. 31 is a religious building in Aldtsjerk, Netherlands, one of the numerous medieval churches in Friesland. It is a mid 12th century Romanesque church with a triple closed choir built out of brick covered with tuffstone, located on the Van Sminiawei 29. The tower dates from the 13th century and is like the church build out of brick covered with tuffstone. The church was once a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Paul but became a Protestant church after the Protestant reformation. Over time the tower and church were several times changed/converted. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 35669. Dokkum
Dokkum is a Dutch fortified city in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the province of Friesland. It has 12,669 inhabitants (February 8, 2020). The fortifications of Dokkum are well preserved and are known as the ''bolwerken'' (bulwarks). It is the fifth most popular shopping city in Friesland. It also had the smallest hospital in the Netherlands. __TOC__ History The best-known event in Dokkum's history is the martyrdom of the Anglo-Saxon missionary Saint Boniface in 754. Oliver of Cologne preached the Fifth Crusade in Dokkum in 1214 and Dokkum sent a contingent; the crescent in the coat of arms of Dokkum refers to this event. Dokkum acquired city rights in 1298. Elfstedentocht
The ''Elfstedentocht'' (; West Frisian: ''Alvestêdetocht'' , English: ''Eleven cities tour'') is a long-distance tour skating event on natural ice, almost long, which is held both as a speed skating competition (with 300 contestants) and a leisure tour (with 16,000 skaters). The ''Elfstedentocht'' is the biggest ice-skating tour in the world. The tour is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, leading past all eleven historical cities of the province. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least thick; sometimes on consecutive years, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years. When the ice is suitable, the tour is announced and starts within 48 hours. The Elfstedentocht has been declared to be in danger of "extinction" due to climate change. Oentsjerk
Oentsjerk ( nl, Oenkerk) is a village in Tytsjerksteradiel in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,784 in January 2017. Oentsjerk is known for its agricultural practical training centre and large elderly care facility, the two largest employers of the town. History The village was first mentioned in 1408 as Ontzerka, and means "church of Oene (person)". Oentsjerk developed in the middle ages on a sandy ridge. Later, it was extended along the Leeuwarden to Dokkum road. The Protestant church was built in 1230 as a replacement of a 12th century predecessor. It has been enlarged and altered multiple times and restored between 1974 and 1976. Several estates were built near Oentsjerk, however only Stania State has remained.
