Otzem () is a moshav in southern Israel. Located in Hevel Lakhish, it falls under the jurisdiction of Lakhish Regional Council. In it had a population of . History The moshav was founded in 1955 by Jewish immigrants from Morocco as part of the effort to settle the region on land that had belonged to the depopulated Palestinian village of Iraq Suwaydan. Iraq Suwaydan
Iraq Suwaydan ( ar, عراق سويدان, he, עיראק סווידאן) was a Palestinian Arab village located northeast of Gaza City. It was captured by Israeli forces in Operation Yoav against the defending Egyptian Army during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The village infrastructure, with the exception of the police station built by the British Mandate authorities, was destroyed. History Archaeological excavations have found remains from the early Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad periods. Ottoman Empire Iraq Suwaydan, like all of Palestine was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1517. Lakhish Regional Council
Lakhish Regional Council ( he, מועצה אזורית לכיש, ''Mo'atza Azorit Lakhish'') is a regional council (Israel), regional council in the Southern District (Israel), Southern District of Israel. It surrounds the ancient city of Lachish, Lakhish and the modern city of Kiryat Gat. It was founded in 1955. Today it includes 15 moshavim and one village, as listed below. As of 2008, three new communities are being built in eastern Lakhish, and some old communities are being expanded. Rabbis Shabtai Ben Hayyim and Ya'akov Alkabetz serve as rabbis of the council. Moshavim
A moshav ( he, מוֹשָׁב, plural ', lit. ''settlement, village'') is a type of Israeli town or settlement, in particular a type of cooperative agricultural community of individual farms settler, pioneered by the Labor Zionism, Labour Zionists between 1904 and 1914, during what is known as the Second Aliyah, second wave of ''aliyah''. A resident or a member of a moshav can be called a "moshavnik" (). The moshavim are similar to kibbutzim with an emphasis on community labour. They were designed as part of the Zionist state-building programme following the green revolution Yishuv ("settlement") in the Mandatory Palestine, British Mandate of Palestine during the early 20th century, but in contrast to the collective farming kibbutzim, farms in a moshav tended to be individually owned but of fixed and equal size. The Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) is the oldest independent nonprofit public service research institute in the Arab world.
