Otto Hartmann (aviator)
Hauptmann Otto Hartmann (7 February 1889 – 3 September 1917) was a German World War I flying ace credited with seven aerial victories.Franks, Bailey, Guest 1993, p. 125. Biography Otto Hartmann was born on 7 February 1889, in Nassau, Kingdom of Württemberg, the German Empire. He entered the Imperial German Army as a cadet on 5 March 1908.Franks, Bailey, Guest 1993, p. 124. He was in service during early World War I, being twice wounded, on 12 August 1915 and 10 June 1916. During 1916, he became an aerial observer in ''Flieger-Abteilung'' (Flier Detachment) 48 of the Luftstreitkräfte. He was promoted to Hauptmann on 6 October 1916. Hartmann won his first aerial victories as an observer, on 22 October and 6 November 1916. He undertook pilot training and was posted to ''Schutzstaffel'' (Protection Squadron) 3. Vladslo is a village in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part (" deelgemeente") of the municipality of Diksmuide. The rural village has slightly over 1,200 inhabitants. Norman Leslie Robert Franks (born 1940) is an English militaria writer who specialises in aviation topics. He focuses on the pilots and squadrons of World Wars I and II. Biography He published his first book in 1976. He was an Organisation and Methods Officer with the Nationwide Building Society in London before he retired. He now lives in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, with his wife Heather. They have two sons, Rob and Mike, and five grandchildren. He was a consultant for the Channel 4 television series ''Dogfight: The Mystery of the Red Baron''. His 1995 book on the Red Baron has been published and reissued by three publishers. He is also one of the founding members of the Cross and Cockade society for World War I aviation historians, which was formed in 1970, and a member of Over the Front, the league of World War I aviation historians. Captain Robert E. Dodds (11 March 1893–8 October 1980) was a Canadian World War I flying ace credited with 11 aerial victories. Postwar, he would remain involved in civil aviation. By 1957, he had risen to become the Director of Civil Aviation for Canada. Early life and infantry service Robert Dodds was born in Stoney Creek, Canada on 11 March 1893, to Margaret Dodds. He enrolled in the 129th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3 January 1916 at Dundas, Canada. On his enlistment papers, he gave his occupation as fruit grower, stated he was single and lived on Rural Route 5 with his mother. Though he claimed no prior military experience, he belonged to the 77th Regiment of militia. He signed his enrollment form "R. Dodds, Lieut".
