Otho R. Singleton
Otho Robards Singleton (October 14, 1814 – January 11, 1889) was a U.S. Representative from Mississippi and a member of the Confederate States Congress during the American Civil War. Born near Nicholasville, Kentucky, Singleton attended the common schools. He graduated from St. Joseph's College, Bardstown, Kentucky, and from the law department of the University of Lexington. He was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced practice in Canton, Mississippi. He served as member of the State house of representatives in 1846 and 1847. He served in the State senate 1848–1854. Singleton was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress (March 4, 1853 – March 3, 1855). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection. Singleton was elected to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses and served from March 4, 1857, until January 12, 1861, when he withdrew. William Augustus Lake
William Augustus Lake (January 6, 1808 – October 15, 1861) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a U.S. Representative from Mississippi from 1855 to 1857. Biography Born near Cambridge, Maryland on January 6, 1808, Lake pursued classical studies and was graduated from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, in 1827. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1831, after which he moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1834 and started practicing in Vicksburg. He served as member of the Mississippi State Senate in 1848. Congress Lake was elected as an American Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855 – March 3, 1857). Jason Niles (December 19, 1814 – July 7, 1894) was a lawyer, newspaper editor, and politician in the United States. He served as mayor and for one term as a U.S. Representative from Mississippi from 1873 to 1875. Biography Niles was born in Burlington, Vermont on December 19, 1814, the son of Daniel Swift Niles and Alice Reed, both natives of New Hampshire. He attended the local schools of Burlington, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont in 1836, and a master's degree in 1846. He taught school in Quebec, Ohio, and Tennessee, and later moved to Mississippi. While teaching school, Niles studied law; he was admitted to the bar in 1851 and began a practice in Kosciusko. He served as an anti-secession delegate to Mississippi's 1851 constitutional convention.
