Othniel Wienges
Othniel Henry Wienges, Jr. (December 27, 1924 – April 2, 2013) was an American Thoroughbred horse breeder and politician in South Carolina. He won numerous state and industry honors in breeding. After establishing prominence in the industry, Wienges entered politics, being elected as a Democrat to the state House of Representatives in 1962 and serving several terms until 1972. Early life Born in Calhoun County, South Carolina in 1924 and named for his father, Wienges grew up in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on the Singleton Plantation, which his grandfather had acquired in the late 19th century. He learned horse breeding with his father, who first raised Standardbreds (used for trotting and pacing races), shifting to Thoroughbreds in the mid-20th century, which specialize in flat racing. Daily Racing Form
The ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) (referred to as the ''Racing Form'' or "Form" and sometimes "telegraph" or "telly") is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1894 in Chicago, Illinois, by Frank Brunell. The paper publishes the past performances of racehorses as a statistical service for bettors covering horse racing in North America. The first edition of the DRF was published in Chicago in November 1894 and publishes up to 35 regional editions every day but Christmas. Calhoun County, South Carolina
Calhoun County is a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 14,119, making it the third-least populous county in the state. Its county seat is St. Matthews. Located in a rural upland area long devoted to cotton plantations, part of the Black Belt of the South, the county was formed in 1908 from portions of Lexington and Orangeburg counties. Founded in 1961, the TOBA's stated mission is to "improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of Thoroughbred owners and breeders." Through its American Graded Stakes Committee, the TOBA is responsible for annually evaluating and setting a Graded stakes race designation for races in the United States whose recent editions have consistently represented the highest quality competition.
