The Waikato rugby league team (also known as the Waikato Cougars, formerly as South Auckland) is a New Zealand rugby league team that represents the Waikato Rugby League in New Zealand Rugby League competitions. They competed in the Lion Red Cup from 1994 to 1996, the Super League Challenge Cup in 1997 and the Bartercard Premiership in 2008 and 2009. New Zealand Māori rugby league team is a rugby league representative side made up of New Zealand Māori players. The side represents the New Zealand Māori Rugby league. Like its union counterpart, the rugby league team previously competed in international competitions. With some controversy, the team participated in the 2000 World Cup as Aotearoa Māori. The Super League International Board had agreed to give a place in their World Cup to the New Zealand Māori team as they attempted to gain allies during the Super League war. Despite that World Cup not taking place, the Rugby League International Federation repeated the offer for the 2000 World Cup when it replaced the Super League International Board following the end of the dispute. Alfred Charles Townsend (23 January 1900 – 26 September 1973) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s. He played for New Zealand in 1928, as a during the era of contested scrums. Playing career Townsend originally played for the City Rovers in the Auckland Rugby League competition. In 1921 he represented Auckland in a match with Canterbury in Christchurch. He later represented the North Island in 1925. Midway through the 1927 season he moved to Otago for work reasons and joined the City Rugby League Club there. He represented Otago between 1926 and 1929. He also represented the South Island, thus becoming one of the few New Zealand league players to have played for both islands. Herbert Pearce
Herbert John Pearce (3 April 1908 – 4 November 1955) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Early life Pearce was born, raised and educated in Christchurch. Playing career After playing rugby league for the Marist Club and Canterbury from 1926 to 1927, Pearce moved south to Dunedin and joined the Christian Brothers Rugby League Club. Considered at the time to be one of the fastest league wingers in the country, Pearce represented Otago in 1928 and 1929 before gaining national selection in 1930, when the New Zealand side toured Australia, playing in two matches against New South Wales.
