Otacon
, nicknamed , is a fictional character from Kojima's ''Metal Gear'' series. Created by Hideo Kojima and designed by Yoji Shinkawa, Otacon was introduced in the series in ''Metal Gear Solid''. In ''Metal Gear Solid'', Otacon, an ArmsTech employee who designed Metal Gear REX, becomes a close ally of Solid Snake upon learning of REX's nuclear strike capabilities. After the events of ''Metal Gear Solid'', he helped Solid Snake form Philanthropy, a group whose main objective is to prevent proliferation of Metal Gear-type weapons. Snake and Otacon infiltrate the military installations and facilities of the world, delving into their compounds through stealth and cyber hacking. In a sense, Snake is the brawn and Otacon is the brains behind "Philanthropy." A devoted fan of anime, Hal's chosen nickname is the short form of the Otaku Convention, with reference to Otakon held in Washington, D.C. each year. Christopher Randolph
Christopher Randolph (born 1959 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American actor known for providing the English voice for Otacon, Hal "Otacon" Emmerich and List of characters in the Metal Gear series#Huey, Dr. "Huey" Emmerich in the ''Metal Gear (series), Metal Gear Solid'' series. Prior to landing his role as Otacon, he auditioned for multiple parts, including Solid Snake. After David Hayter was recast from playing Snake in ''Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes'', Randolph became the longest serving English voice actor in the franchise, having a role in all but one main Metal Gear Solid series game since 1998 (the exception being ''Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater''). He also writes, directs, and teaches acting. He received an MFA from the graduate acting program at University of California, San Diego, UCSD. Metal Gear Solid (1998 Video Game)
is a stealth game developed by Konami and released for the PlayStation in 1998. It was directed, produced, and written by Hideo Kojima, and follows the MSX2 video games ''Metal Gear'' and '' Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake'', which Kojima also worked on. It was unveiled at the 1996 Tokyo Game Show and then demonstrated at trade shows including the 1997 Electronic Entertainment Expo; its Japanese release was originally planned for late 1997, before being delayed to 1998. Players control Solid Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit. Snake must liberate hostages and stop the terrorists from launching a nuclear strike. Cinematic cutscenes were rendered using the in-game engine and graphics, and voice acting is used throughout. The Metal Gears are typically autonomous nuclear launch platforms which the player must destroy to save the world and complete the game. Often, confronting the latest Metal Gear model is one of the final challenges of each game.
