Osmania Medical College
Osmania Medical College, formerly known as ''The Hyderabad Medical School'', is a medical college in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It was founded in 1846 by the 5th Nizam of Hyderabad and Berar, Afzal ud Dowla, Asaf Jah 5. The college was originally affiliated to Osmania University system, It is now affiliated to the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, and the Osmania General Hospital. After the establishment of the Osmania University in 1919, the school was renamed Osmania Medical College, after the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. Rupa Bai Furdoonji
Rupa Bai Furdoonji, born to a Parsi family, was the world's first female anesthetist. She practiced medicine in Hyderabad, and played a major role in introducing the use of chloroform as an anesthetic in India. Early life and career In 1885, Furdoonji began her studies and was one of five women to enroll in medical courses at Hyderabad Medical College. In 1889, she obtained a degree of ''Hakeem'', equivalent to that of a Medical Doctor. Subsequently, she pursued a medical degree from Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. In 1909, with the encouragement from Annie Besant, Furdoonji went to Edinburgh, Scotland to gain more experience and knowledge in anesthetics. There, she obtained diplomas in Physics and Chemistry from The University of Edinburgh since no specialized course emphasized anesthetics. Hyderabad Chloroform Commission
The Hyderabad Chloroform Commission was commissioned in Hyderabad by the then ruler of Hyderabad State, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan. The first Chloroform Commission was gathered in the year 1888 to assess the toxicity of chloroform when used in humans to allow for painless operations. The second commission was formed in the year 1891. Thus making Hyderabad the first to use the chloroform in a medical field. Famous Scottish surgeon, Dr Edward Lawrie, Residency Surgeon in Hyderabad, pioneered a technique that he claimed permitted safe and painless operations. The first commission formed at Dr. Lawrie's request to evaluate his technique. William Campbell Maclean
William Campbell Maclean (29 November 1811 – 20 November 1898) was a Surgeon General in the Indian Medical Service. He founded the Hyderabad Medical School which later became the Osmania Medical College. He served as a professor of military medicine at the Army Medical School in Netley from 1860 to 1886. William was born in Blackburn House, Ayr, the tenth of eleven children of his father John was Laird of Boreray and came from the Macleans of Ardgour and on his mother Jesse's side from the MacLeods of Dunvegan. He grew up with home tutors before going to the Dollar and Edinburgh Academies. He joined the University of Edinburgh in 1829 and received the medical license in 1832 and MD in 1833. Afzal ad-Dawlah, Asaf Jah V Mir Tahniyath Ali Khan Siddiqi (11 October 1827 – 26 February 1869) was the ruling Nizam of Hyderabad, India, from 1857 to 1869.
