Oskar Matute
Oskar Matute García de Jalón (born 5 October 1972) is a Spanish politician and a member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain. He was previously a member of the Basque Parliament. Early life Matute was born on 5 October 1972 in Barakaldo, Basque Country. He grew up in Bilbao but currently lives in Barakaldo. He has degree in business studies from the University of the Basque Country. Career Matute was an activist in the movement against compulsory military service in Spain and the pacifist Elkarri movement. He was also a member of the Viento Sur and Ezker Gogoa foundations, and Lokarri and Euskadiko Langile Komisioak. Matute was co-ordinator for the presidency of the United Left–Greens (Ezker Batua–Berdeak, EB–B) and the federal presidency of the United Left (IU). Congress Of Deputies (Spain)
The Congress of Deputies ( es, link=no, Congreso de los Diputados, italic=unset) is the lower house of the Cortes Generales, Spain's legislative branch. The Congress meets in the Palace of the Parliament () in Madrid. It has 350 members elected by constituencies (matching fifty Spanish provinces and two autonomous cities) by closed list proportional representation using the D'Hondt method. Deputies serve four-year terms. The presiding officer is the President of the Congress of Deputies, who is elected by the members thereof. It is the analogue to a speaker. In the Congress, MPs from the political parties, or groups of parties, form parliamentary groups. Basque Government
The Basque Government ( eu, Eusko Jaurlaritza, es, Gobierno Vasco) is the governing body of the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. The head of the Basque government is known as the ''Lehendakari''. The Lehendakari is appointed by the Basque Parliament every four years, after a regional election. Its headquarters are located in the Lakua district of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Álava. Party-list proportional representation (list-PR) is a subset of proportional representation electoral systems in which multiple candidates are elected (e.g., elections to parliament) through their position on an electoral list. 2001 Basque Regional Election
The 2001 Basque regional election was held on Sunday, 13 May 2001, to elect the 7th Parliament of the Basque Autonomous Community. All 75 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The PNV–EA alliance, established by the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and Basque Solidarity (EA) parties which had formed the Basque government since 1998, won a landslide victory with 33 seats and 42.4% of the share, which represented their best combined result in history as well as the best performance for the top voted list in a Basque regional election, outperforming the PNV's own record in 1984. The right of a people to self-determination is a cardinal principle in modern international law (commonly regarded as a ''jus cogens'' rule), binding, as such, on the United Nations as authoritative interpretation of the Charter's norms. It states that peoples, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and fair equality of opportunity, have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no interference. United Left ( es, Izquierda Unida , IU) is a federative political movement in Spain that was first organized as a coalition in 1986, bringing together several left-wing political organizations, most notably the Communist Party of Spain. United Left–Greens
United Left–Greens ( eu, Ezker Batua–Berdeak, EB–B) was a left wing environmentalist political party in Spain. Javier Madrazo led the party as general coordinator from 1994 to 2009. In the 1994 Basque elections EB won 93,291 votes (9.15%) and gained its first six seats in the Basque Parliament. It was a member of the Basque Government for 8 years (between 2001 and 2009), supporting Juan José Ibarretxe of the Basque Nationalist Party as ''lehendakari''.
