Oscar Saenger
Oscar Saenger (January 5, 1868 – April 20, 1929) was a singing teacher. With the Victor Talking Machine Company he produced a complete course in vocal training in twenty lessons. Biography He was born on January 5, 1868, in Brooklyn, New York City to German-American parents. When he was 18 years old, in 1886, he received a scholarship to the National Conservatory of Music of America. In 1891 he became the baritone soloist for the New American Opera Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and in 1892 was a soloist for the Arion Society on their European tour. He married Charlotte Wells on October 5, 1892, in Brooklyn. Grace Hoffman
Grace Hoffman (born Goldie Hoffman; January 14, 1921July 26, 2008) was an American operatic mezzo-soprano and academic teacher. Based at the Staatsoper Stuttgart from 1955 to 1992, she performed roles such as Verdi's Azucena and Eboli at leading opera houses in Europe and the Americas. Her signature role was Wagner's Brangäne, performed at the Bayreuth Festival, among others. Life Goldie Hoffman was born on January 14, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio, to a family of Hungarian origin. She studied literature and musicology and received her first vocal training from Lila Robeso, then with Friedrich Schorr and Giuseppe Gentile as well as Mario Basiola in Rome. In 1951 she won a singing competition in Lausanne. She made her debut in 1951 with the touring Wagner Opera Company as Lucia in Mascagni's '' Cavalleria rusticana''. Marie Rappold, née Winterrath (17 August 1872 – 12 May 1957) was a German-born American operatic soprano. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera from 1905 to 1920. Early life She was born in Barmen, Germany on 17 August 1872. She appeared on stage in London at the age of five before moving with her parents to Brooklyn, New York, where she later studied with Oscar Saenger and sang with the Amberg German Opera Company. In New York City she studied singing with Estelle Liebling. Opera and recording career On 22 November 1905, Rappold made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Sulamith in Karl Goldmark's '' Die Königin von Saba'' (''The Queen of Sheba'', 1875). Eleazer Leon Rains, also ''Léon Rains'', (October 1, 1870 – June 11, 1954) was an American operatic bass, film actor and voice teacher. After studies in New York City and Paris, he toured in the U.S. for two years with Frank Damrosch's opera troupe and with Nellie Melba. From 1899, he was based at the Dresden Court Opera, with performances in world premieres such as ''Salome'', and guest appearances in Europe, including the Bayreuth Festival, and at the Metropolitan Opera. When the United States entered the World War in 1917, he returned home, where he worked in concert and as a voice teacher. He also appeared as an actor in silent films. Bernice de Pasquali (December 7, 1873 – April 3, 1925), born Bernice James, was an American coloratura soprano singer and pianist. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera from 1908 to 1917, and was the first American woman elected to membership in the Accademia Filarmonica Romana. Early life Bernice W. Florence Hinkle (June 22, 1885 - April 19, 1933) was an operatic soprano. Biography She was born on June 22, 1885, in Columbia, Pennsylvania. She toured with the Metropolitan Opera Company, and in 1915, appeared in Richmond, Virginia. In 1919, she appeared at Aeolian Hall (Manhattan). She died on April 19, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Orville Harrold
Orville Harrold (17 November 1877 – 23 October 1933) was an American operatic tenor and musical theatre actor. He began his career in 1906 as a performer in operettas in New York City, and was also seen during his early career in cabaret, musical theatre, and vaudeville performances. With the aid of Oscar Hammerstein I, he branched out into opera in 1910 as a leading tenor with Hammerstein's opera houses in New York City and Philadelphia. While his career from this point on primarily consisted of opera performances, he periodically returned to operetta and musical theatre throughout his career. He notably created the role of Captain Dick Warrington in the world premiere of Victor Herbert's operetta '' Naughty Marietta'' in November 1910.
