Oscar Gjøslien
Oscar Gjøslien (also spelled Gjoeslien, November 9, 1909 – May 20, 1995) was a Norwegian cross-country skier who competed during the 1930s. He won a bronze medal at the 1939 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in the 50 km. In 1935, Gjøslien won the 50 km cross-country skiing event at the Holmenkollen ski festival. Because of his successes, Gjøslien was awarded the Holmenkollen medal in 1940 (shared with Annar Ryen). Holmenkollen
Holmenkollen () is a mountain and a neighbourhood in the Vestre Aker borough of Oslo, Norway. It goes up to above sea level and is well-known for its international skiing competitions. Overview In addition to being a residential area, the area has been a ski recreation area since the late 19th century, with its famous ski jumping hill, the Holmenkollbakken, hosting competitions since 1892. To the north, the area borders to the woodlands area Marka. The Holmenkoll Line of the Oslo Metro runs through the neighborhood, serving the stations Besserud and Holmenkollen. The Holmenkollen Chapel was destroyed by arson in August 1992 by black metal artists Varg Vikernes, Bård “Faust” Eithun and Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth, but later rebuilt. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1934 took place on February 20–25, 1934 in Sollefteå, Sweden. Men's cross country 18 km February 22, 1934 50 km February 24, 1934 4 × 10 km relay February 25, 1934 Germany's silver was the first for the nation at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. While battling for the silver medal, Sweden's Arthur Häggblad and Norway's Oddbjørn Hagen got off course during their final leg and lost about 10 minutes. They were both passed by Germany, and Häggblad beat Hagen at the finish line for the bronze medal. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1939 took place February 11–19, 1939 in Zakopane, Poland. This was the Polish city's second time hosting the championships after having done so in 1929. International Ski Federation
The ''Fédération internationale de ski et de snowboard'' (FIS; en, International Ski and Snowboard Federation) is the highest international governing body for skiing and snowboarding. Founded on 2 February 1924 in Chamonix, France during the inaugural Winter Olympic Games, the FIS is responsible for the Olympic disciplines of Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding. The FIS is also responsible for setting the international competition rules. The organization has a membership of 132 national ski associations, and is based in Oberhofen am Thunersee, Switzerland. Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Annar Ryen
Annar Ryen (19 October 1909, Os, Hedmark – 9 March 1985) was a Norwegian cross-country skier who competed in the 1930s. He won a gold medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1937 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Because of his successes, Ryen was awarded the Holmenkollen medal in 1940 (shared with Oscar Gjøslien). This was the last medal before World War II. He represented the clubs Tynset IF and IL Nansen. After retiring he was a farmer in Dalsbygda in Os, Hedmark Os is a municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Østerdalen.
