Orton, Eden
Orton is a village and civil parish in Cumbria, England. It lies south of Penrith, from Appleby-in-Westmorland and from the M6 motorway. The village is in the upper Lune Valley, at the foot of Orton Scar in the Orton Fells. The Lake District is nearby. The parish includes a wide area outside the village, and had a population of 594 in 2001, decreasing to 588 at the 2011 Census. Orton village Orton has many 17th and 18th-century cottages. Most of these traditional dwellings are stone-faced or whitewashed. Other features in the village are the 13th-century All Saints Church, a Methodist chapel, a primary school, a pub called the ''George Hotel'', and a small handmade-chocolate factory. In addition it has a Village Tearoom and several B&Bs. The shop-cum-post office is open ten hours a day. There are many local businesses around the village, such as builders and joiners. The roots of the Orton Ceramic Foundation date back to the establishment of the "Standard Pyrometric Cone Company" in 1896 by Edward J. Orton imagery, also called an Orton slide sandwich or the Orton Effect, is a photography technique which blends two completely different photos of the same scene, resulting in a distinctive mix of high and low detail areas within the same photo. It was originated by photographer Michael Orton in the mid 1980s. History The original technique invented by Michael Orton was to overlay two or more images of an identical scene with very different exposures on slide film. Orton Grain
Orton Irwin Grain (August 9, 1863 – February 2, 1930) was a Canadian physician and politician in Manitoba. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1899 to 1903, and again from 1907 to 1913. Grain was born in Fergus, Canada West (now Ontario), the son of William Grain, a native of Gibraltar, and Mary Orton, the sister of Dr. G. T. Orton, and attended schools in Fergus and the Toronto School of Medicine. He was assistant surgeon of the 91st battalion in Canada. Grain was one of the charter holders of the Winnipeg and Northern Railway, and served as mayor of Selkirk in 1896. In religion, he was a member of the Church of England. He practised medicine in Banff, Alberta, Manitou, Manitoba, Winnipeg and Selkirk. In 1890, Grain married Annie Cull. Orton Chirwa
Orton Chirwa (30 January 1919 – 20 October 1992) was a lawyer and political leader in colonial Nyasaland and after independence became Malawi's Minister of Justice and Attorney General. After a dispute with Malawi's autocratic President Hastings Kamuzu Banda, he and his wife Vera Chirwa, Vera were exiled. After being kidnapped abroad they were tried in Malawi on charges of treason and sentenced to death. Amnesty International named the couple prisoners of conscience.
