Ortley, Oregon
Ortley is a former town in Wasco County, Oregon, in the United States. It was about south of Rowena and about southeast of Mosier; the site is now on private land and no evidence of the townsite exists today. It is still classed as a populated place by the USGS. History Ortley was originally developed by the Hood River Orchard & Land Company, which filed a plat for the townsite in 1911, naming it for the " Ortley" apple. The company sold town lots and small orchard parcels, and Ortley quickly grew to a population of 300. The community included a post office, several shops and a hotel. However, the land proved unsuitable for apple production because of the prevailing high winds and scarcity of water. By 1922, the town was all but abandoned, and in that year the post office closed. Wasco County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,213. Its county seat is The Dalles. The county is named for a local tribe of Native Americans, the Wasco, a Chinook tribe who live on the south side of the Columbia River. It is near the Washington state line. Wasco County comprises The Dalles Micropolitan Statistical Area. Rowena, Oregon
Rowena is an unincorporated community in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Rowena as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. The population was 187 at the 2010 census. Rowena is located west of The Dalles on the Columbia River, where the river passes through the natural feature Rowena Gap. Interstate 84 ( Columbia River Highway) and U.S. Route 30 ( Historic Columbia River Highway) pass through the community. Route 30 near Rowena is notable for the Rowena Loops. The origin of the name "Rowena" is disputed. Two sources say Rowena was named for H.S. Rowe, a railroad company official, in the early 1880s. Mosier, Oregon
Mosier is a city along the Columbia River in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The population was 433 at the 2010 census. History Mosier was first settled in 1854 and incorporated as a city in 1914. The building now known as the post office was at that time the bank, and the original safe is still intact on-site. Mosier School was built in 1920 and until 1963 was a 1st–12th grade 1A school. From 1964 to 2002 it functioned as part of the Chenowith School District as an elementary school that ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade. In January 2003, the Chenowith School District approved the charter application for Mosier Elementary to become a charter school known as Mosier Community School. Professor and historian Stephen Arndt has counted a total of 256 ghost towns in the state, some well known, others "really obscure."
