Orthodox Judaism
Orthodox Judaism is the collective term for the traditionalist and theologically conservative branches of contemporary Judaism. Theologically, it is chiefly defined by regarding the Torah, both Written and Oral, as revealed by God to Moses on Mount Sinai and faithfully transmitted ever since. Yeshiva
A yeshiva (; he, ישיבה, , sitting; pl. , or ) is a traditional Jewish educational institution focused on the study of Rabbinic literature, primarily the Talmud and halacha (Jewish law), while Torah and Jewish philosophy are studied in parallel. The studying is usually done through daily ''shiurim'' (lectures or classes) as well as in study pairs called '' chavrusas'' (Aramaic for 'friendship' or 'companionship'). ''Chavrusa''-style learning is one of the unique features of the yeshiva. In the United States and Israel, different levels of yeshiva education have different names. Kollel Bet Mordechai (The Beit Mordechai Campus Kollel) is a Kollel and Bet Midrash in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is associated with Mizrachi and is based at the Yeshiva College of South Africa. The Kollel facilitates advanced, as well as community Torah learning on a daily basi Advanced Yeshiva#Curriculum, yeshiva studies in its ''kollel'' include daily ''shiurim'' in Talmud with Rishonim, and in halacha. Kollel Yad Shaul
Kollel Yad Shaul is a ''Charedi'' yeshiva based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It played a pioneering role in the growth and spread of Torah in South Africa. It has produced numerous serving Rabbis and educatorsand provides a ''Beit Midrash'' open to the wider community. Established in the early 1970's, it was originally based in Yeoville, Johannesburg until 2000, when it moved to the suburb of The GardensRabbi :he:אריה_ליב_גרוסנס#משפחתו , Boruch Dov Grossnass headed "The Kollel", as it is known, for 40 years; Rabbi Grossnass took over from the late Rabbi Mordechai Shakovitzky when the latter moved to Israel. Ohr Somayach in South Africa is an affiliate of Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem, a network of Haredi yeshivas and Synagogues. Like its parent institution, it focuses on educating baal teshuvas ("returnees" to Orthodox Judaism). It has branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Rabbinical College of Pretoria (Hebrew ''Yeshiva LeRabbonus Pretoria'') is a Chabad Yeshiva in Pretoria, South Africa. It was established in 2001 under the inspiration of late Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris. The Yeshiva of Cape Town is a kollel and yeshiva established in 1994. Its full title is "The Rabbi Cyril and Ann Harris Yeshiva of Cape Town", named for the late Chief Rabbi. Yeshivah Gedolah Of Johannesburg
Yeshivah Gedolah of Johannesburg was one of the first Yeshivot established in South Africa. Since its founding in 1978, it has played an important - though understated - role in the South African religious community. It is based in Glenhazel, Johannesburg. It was established and headed by Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Azriel Goldfein until his death in 2007, and is now headed by his sons Rabbi Avraham and Rabbi David Goldfein. The Yeshiva accommodates students from across the spectrum of Orthodoxy. The Hirsch Lyons Primary and High Schools are associated with the Yeshivah. Rabbi Goldfein studied in Telz Yeshiva, under great rabbis who survived the Holocaust, and was a lifelong ''talmid muvhak'' (prominent student) of Rabbi Mordechai Gifter. Yeshiva Maharsha Beis Aharon is a Haredi Community based in Fairmount, Johannesburg. The community was founded in 1982 by the late Rabbi Aharon Pfeuffer (for whom the Yeshiva was later named), and is Headed by Rabbi M. Raff. The Yeshiva comprises a Beit Midrash. It also operates a pre-primary, and primary and high schools for boys and girls. In 2014, the synagogue and school facilities were renovated. Yeshiva Pri Eitz Chaim was a Chareidi (Litvishe) Yeshiva based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Yeshiva was established in 2004 by Rabbi Adam Saffer together with Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Rabbi Eichenstein and operated for three years, and was located in Kollel Yad Shaul in Gardens, Johannesburg. Rabbi Eichestein was joined in 2007 by Rabbi Gedalya Sternstein. Rabbi Eichenstein delivered weekly lectures to the public, as well as to high school students, in addition to his Yeshiva duties.
