Ornithological Council
The Ornithological Council is an association of ornithology, ornithological organisations based in the Americas involved in bird study and conservation. It was established by Richard C. Banks and incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1992 as a non-profit organization, nonprofit organization. Its original members comprised the American Ornithologists' Union, Association of Field Ornithologists, Colonial Waterbirds Society (now the Waterbird Society), Cooper Ornithological Society, Pacific Seabird Group, Raptor Research Foundation and Wilson Ornithological Society. Since then they have been joined by CIPAMEX, the Neotropical Ornithological Society, the Society of Canadian Ornithologists and the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds. The Council focuses not only on issues affecting birds and their survival, but also the needs of ornithologists. Ornithology
Ornithology is a branch of zoology that concerns the "methodological study and consequent knowledge of birds with all that relates to them." Several aspects of ornithology differ from related disciplines, due partly to the high visibility and the aesthetic appeal of birds. It has also been an area with a large contribution made by amateurs in terms of time, resources, and financial support. Studies on birds have helped develop key concepts in biology including evolution, behaviour and ecology such as the definition of species, the process of speciation, instinct, learning, ecological niches, guilds, island biogeography, phylogeography, and conservation. The Pacific Seabird Group (PSG) is an international professional ornithological society based in the US, dedicated to the study and conservation of Pacific seabirds and their environment. The objectives of the Pacific Seabird Group are exclusively scientific, educational, conservational, and nonprofit. Society For The Conservation And Study Of Caribbean Birds
BirdsCaribbean, formerly the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds (SCSCB), is an ornithological non-profit organization. Founded in 1988, the organization strives to protect Caribbean birds and their habitats through education, research, conservation action and capacity building. It is the largest bird conservation organization in the Caribbean region, including the Bahamas and Bermuda as well as the islands within the Caribbean basin. It was founded in 1983, and is a member of the Ornithological Council. CIPAMEX, more fully La Sociedad para el Estudio y Conservación de las Aves en México, is a Mexican ornithology, ornithological non-profit organization, non-profit organization, with its principal objective the study and conservation of Mexican birds and their habitats. Wilson Ornithological Society
The Wilson Ornithological Society (WOS) is an ornithology, ornithological organization that was formally established in 1886 as the Wilson Ornithological Chapter of the Agassiz Association. It is based at the Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, United States. It was named after Alexander Wilson (ornithologist), Alexander Wilson, a prominent early American ornithologist. The name of the group later evolved through being generally known as the Wilson Ornithological Club (or just the Wilson Club) until it became the WOS in 1955. It publishes the ''Wilson Journal of Ornithology'' (previously the ''Wilson Bulletin''). It is a member of the Ornithological Council. The Raptor Research Foundation (RRF) is a United States based ornithology, ornithological society, focusing on the behavior, ecology, and conservation of bird of prey, birds of prey. It was founded on 11 February 1966 as a non-profit organization, non-profit scientific society with the primary goal of accumulating and disseminating scientific information about hawks, eagles, falcons and owls. It publishes the quarterly scientific journal, journal ''The Journal of Raptor Research'', as well as a newsletter, ''Wingspan''. The Cooper Ornithological Society (COS), formerly the Cooper Ornithological Club, was an American ornithological society. It was founded in 1893 in California and operated until 2016. Its name commemorated James Graham Cooper, an early California biologist. The Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) is an American ornithological society, with a strong focus on field studies and banding, priding itself as serving as a bridge between professional and amateur ornithologists. It was founded in 1922 as the New England Bird Banding Association, then becoming the Northeastern Bird-Banding Association, before expanding its geographical scope and acquiring its current name.
