Ormonde (horse)
Ormonde (1883–1904) was an undefeated English Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1886 Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, English Triple Crown and was labelled the 'horse of the century' at the time. He also won the St. James's Palace Stakes, Champion Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes twice. Ormonde was trained at Kingsclere by John Porter (horseman), John Porter for the Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, 1st Duke of Westminster. His regular jockeys were Fred Archer (jockey), Fred Archer and Tom Cannon, Sr., Tom Cannon. After retiring from racing he suffered fertility problems, but still sired Orme (horse), Orme, who won the Eclipse Stakes twice. The peerage title Earl of Ormond and the related titles Duke of Ormonde and Marquess of Ormonde have a long and complex history. An earldom of Ormond has been created three times in the Peerage of Ireland. History of Ormonde titles The earldom of Ormond was originally created in 1328 for James Butler. For many subsequent years, the earls took significant roles in the government of Ireland, and kept a tradition of loyalty to the English crown and to English custom. Several of the earls also had reputations as scholars. The fifth earl was created Earl of Wiltshire (1449) in the Peerage of England, but he was attainted in 1461 and his peerages were declared forfeit. Ormonde Wind Farm
The Ormonde Wind Farm is a wind farm west of Barrow-in-Furness in the Irish Sea. The wind farm covers an area of . It has a total capacity of 150 MW and is expected to produce around 500 GWh of electricity per year. Planning Originally the Ormonde project was planned as a hybrid wind and natural gas powered electricity generation plant supplied from the Ormonde South and Ormonde North gas fields. The project was developed by Eclipse Energy. In 2008, Vattenfall bought Eclipse Energy and the project was developed as wind energy only. The project management company throughout the project has been Offshore Design Engineering. Construction Construction started in 2010 and was completed in August 2011. John Ormonde
John Michael Ormonde (15 September 1905 – 25 June 1981) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. Early and personal life He was born 15 September 1905 at Lismore, County Waterford, the son of John Ormonde, shopkeeper, and his wife, Ann Ormonde (née O'Brien). He was educated at the Lismore CBS. A member of Fianna Éireann, he delivered dispatches during the Irish Civil War, until his arrest before his seventeenth birthday in 1923. He was imprisoned in Lismore castle and Fermoy, but he escaped and remained on the run until the end of the civil war. He attended De La Salle College Waterford and qualified as a teacher in 1928. He was appointed principal of Kilmacthomas national school, County Waterford, in 1932. He married Hanna Mary Hickey, a nurse, in July 1931. They had one daughter and three sons. Ann Ormonde (born 20 January 1935) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician and was a member of Seanad Éireann from 1993 to 2011. She was elected by the Cultural and Educational Panel. She was first elected to the Seanad in 1992 and re-elected at every subsequent election until she lost her seat at the 2011 election. Ormonde (Cazenovia, New York)
Ormonde (1885–88) is a Shingle Style country house built on the eastern shore of Cazenovia Lake in Cazenovia, New York. It was designed by architect Frank Furness for George R. Preston, a New Orleans banker who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 9-bedroom "summer cottage" was originally the centerpiece of a 300-acre (121.4 ha) estate, that was expanded to 400 acres (161.8 ha) early in the 20th century. The carriagehouse and other buildings have since been demolished, and the land subdivided, leaving the main house and boathouse on 2.4 acres (1 ha). The boathouse's design is unusual: a square stone ground floor at lake's edge supporting a circular shingled second floor, ringed by a 360-degree deck. It relates to Furness's Undine Barge Club (1882–83) on Philadelphia's Boathouse Row, and the architect's own summer cottage, Idlewild (c. 1890), in Media, Pennsylvania. Sir James Ormond ''alias'' Butler (died 17 July 1497) was the son of John Butler, 6th Earl of Ormond. He was Lord Treasurer of Ireland from 1492 to 1494, and helped to defend the Lordship of Ireland against the forces of Perkin Warbeck. He was murdered by Sir Piers Butler on 17 July 1497. Piers would later hold the title of Earl of Ormond. Family James Ormond was the eldest of three sons of John Butler, 6th Earl of Ormond (d. 14 October 1476), by his wife Reynalda O'Brien, daughter of Turlogh "The Brown" O'Brien, King of Thomond. In 1458 one of his younger brothers, John Ormond (d. 5 October 1503) married the heiress Joan Chaworth (d.1507), by whom he had three daughters. Paul Ormond
Paul Ormond (born 18 August 1977 near Templemore, County Tipperary) is an Republic of Ireland, Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Loughmore–Castleiney GAA, Loughmore–Castleiney and the Tipperary GAA, Tipperary senior inter-county team. Ormond was the official captain of the Tipperary team in 2008, however, when Ormond or any other Loughmore player failed to secure a regular starting place, Eoin Kelly (Tipperary hurler), Eoin Kelly fulfilled the role of captain. Early life Paul Ormond was born just outside Templemore, County Tipperary in 1977.
